Who could replace Xavi as Barcelona manager as situation over his future takes fresh turn

Barcelona find themselves in another mess as their managerial situation has taken yet another turn ahead of the summer.

Xavi Hernandez did previously announce his intention to leave Barcelona, but he then changed his mind in recent weeks to stay at the club.

However, it appears recent comments about the club’s financial situation, as well as the chaos surrounding January signing Vitor Roque, have upset the Barcelona hierarchy, and Xavi may now leave after all. If he does go, Barcelona cannot afford to get his replacement wrong.

Barcelona eye up Rafa Marquez and Hansi Flick as Xavi replacement

According to Mundo Deportivo, the two main candidates to replace Xavi if he is dismissed are Rafa Marquez and Hansi Flick.

Marquez is, like Xavi, a Barcelona legend, who appeared 242 times across a seven-year spell, winning four La Liga titles and two Champions Leagues.

Flick was last seen in the German National Team job, but did win the Champions League with Bayern Munich in 2020.

However, it does seem likely that Barcelona will end up leaning towards one candidate more.

With Thomas Tuchel set to depart Bayern Munich, it seems likely that the German giants will attempt to bring Flick back to their club, leaving Marquez as the main option.

Marquez is currently the head coach of the Barcelona B team, and could make the internal step up to take charge if his former teammate ends his time at the club.

In 76 matches in charge of Barcelona Atletic, he has won 37, drawn 20 and lost 19 times, with his side scoring 105 and conceding 82 goals, at a rate of 1.72 points per match.

By comparison, Xavi has managed the senior side 140 times, with 88 wins, 23 draws and 29 losses, at a rate of 2.05 points per game.

Some have argued that Xavi has gone underappreciated at Barcelona, and if he is dismissed with Marquez stepping up, the Mexican will hope to cement his status as a club icon.
