Aston Villa can equal 31-year record by doing one thing against Crystal Palace

Aston Villa can equal a 31-year record in the Premier League by doing one thing against Crystal Palace on Sunday.

The curtain will close on Aston Villa’s remarkable campaign this weekend when they travel to Crystal Palace.

Spearheaded by the relentless Unai Emery, Villa sealed Champions League qualification on Tuesday night following Tottenham’s 2-0 defeat against Manchester City.

It sparked wild celebrations at the club’s Player of the Year awards night, with Emery reserving praise for the supporters who helped get them there.

Describing his first full season at Villa Park as a “dream”, Villa can cap off a historic campaign by making more history at Selhurst Park.

The Villans can break the record for the most points won in London in a single campaign, currently tied with Arsenal and Liverpool on 16. Meanwhile, the visitors are also looking to do the double over Palace for the first time since the 1980/81 campaign.

The third record Villa are eyeing up against the Eagles would see them complete a hat-trick in one as victory would not only see them record the most points in London and do the double, but they’d equal a 31-year record in the process.

Aston Villa have registered 20 wins in 37 matches this season, only needing one more victory to equal their best total of wins in a Premier League campaign.

In the inaugural Premier League season, Villa – managed by Ron Atkinson – achieved 21 wins but that was in a 42-game campaign.

So, if Villa do record three points against a resurgent Palace side, it’ll be the most wins they’ve had in a 38-game cycle, which just demonstrates how incredible the job Emery has done.

Ollie Watkins is also eyeing up Premier League record

When speaking about the season Ollie Watkins has had at Villa Park, you run out of superlatives to describe what he’s achieved.

The Aston Villa sharpshooter has decimated defences throughout and been a complete nuisance to play against, as evinced by his incredible scoring record.

Watkins has produced a simply breathtaking 27 goals and 13 assists in all competitions, with 19 of those strikes coming in the top flight.

Not only does the 28-year-old top the charts for most assists across Europe’s top five leagues, but if he bags his third goal in eight appearances against Palace, he will become the first player in Villa’s history to reach the landmark 20 goals in the Premier League.

Villa will want to cap off a fine campaign by breaking a whole host of records, and Watkins will spearhead that charge.
