Newcastle could sign world's most valuable player in his position from 22/23 for less than £20m, coup for Howe - opinion

Newcastle United will be eager to bolster their ranks in the summer transfer window in a bid to kick on next season.

The Magpies have experienced a mixed campaign and the best they can now hope for is qualification for the Europa Conference League.

Newcastle’s squad was pushed to its limits this season and no matter what happens this season, they’ll need to increase their strength in depth.

One area the Magpies hierarchy will need to look at is in goal. Martin Dubravka is being linked with a move away and Loris Karius’ contract expires in June.

Over the last few days, speculation linking Newcastle with one of the best goalkeepers around has been gathering pace.

A report from The Telegraph has claimed that the Magpies are readying a £15million bid and a five-year contract for Ramsdale.

Admittedly, the player himself rubbished claims suggesting he had already agreed a deal at St James’ Park, taking to X to say it was news to him.

But while those reports could have been a case of jumping the gun, it certainly looks as though Newcastle are keen on getting a deal for Ramsdale over the line.

And you can’t blame them. Ramsdale is an outstanding goalkeeper who has done very well for one of the Premier League’s top teams.

Last year, the CIES Football Observatory listed the England international in first place in their list of the world’s most expensive goalkeepers, as per their statistical model.

It remains to be seen whether Newcastle would actually be successful with a £15million bid, however. The Gunners paid £30million for him and his contract runs for several more years.

The Magpies may just be testing the waters and, over the coming months, discussions between the two clubs could yield a more definitive solution.

This is certainly an exciting transfer lead for Newcastle, who’ll be eager to kick on after struggling to build on their superb 2022/23 campaign.
