Report: Talks have progressed after Eddie Howe decides he wants 'perfect' player at Newcastle next season

Newcastle United may be set to spend big this summer.

While it remains unclear as to what, if any, European competition Newcastle will be playing in next season, there has been talk of a big rebuild at St James’ Park.

Sadly, as has seemingly been the case for what feels like an age now, FFP restrictions may limit exactly what the club can do this summer.

Still, the transfer window is fast-approaching and Eddie Howe confirmed on Friday that the club were “finalising” plans for recruitment.

After such a gruelling season across so many fronts to have tested almost every position in the squad, plenty of names are naturally being linked with a move.

One of those is a player Howe has worked with and signed before.

Aaron Ramsdale, who former Toon defender Danny Simpson has hailed as the “perfect” signing for the club, is believed to be a player Howe now wants at Newcastle.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the manager has decided to try and push through a move for the England international and talks are said to have progressed in recent weeks.

The club are reportedly willing to pay £15m to sign the stopper, who Howe also brought to Bournemouth during his time on the south coast.

Interestingly, the report adds that Ramsdale would not be moving to Newcastle as a guaranteed starter, but rather to battle Nick Pope for the No.1 spot.

Newcastle’s goalkeeping department could be really strong next season

Howe was said to have been “crestfallen” when Pope suffered a shoulder injury back in December, such is the high esteem in which he’s held by the Newcastle manager.

While both players will surely want to start next season, it’ll be interesting to see what they are like under constant competition.

Martin Dubravka, who stepped in for Pope this season, hasn’t always convinced, after all.

To have two England internationals competing for the jersey sounds very promising indeed.
