Championship star wanted by Derby County now offered fresh contract by current club, he's yet to accept it

A Championship player linked with Derby County has been offered a new contract by his club.

Derby County are returning to the Championship after a two-year hiatus, with Paul Warne guiding the Rams to a 2nd place finish in the 2023/24 League One season.

But the Championship will arguably be tougher than when the Rams were last in it, with Birmingham City being relegated despite having 50 points to their name this season.

Warne then will need to add quality and depth to his side this summer to ensure that Derby County have the tools needed to beat the drop next season.

And the Rams have been linked with a number of players including goalkeeper Viktor Johansson and loan man Ebou Adams.

Sheffield Wednesday striker Josh Windass is also a reported target; the 30-year-old sees his current deal in Sheffield expire this summer, following four seasons at the club.

Sheffield Wednesday offer Josh Windass new contract

Windass previously revealed that his agent was in talks with Sheffield Wednesday over his future, though he gave no indication as to whether he would be staying at Hillsborough.

But the Owls announced their retained list on Friday, revealing that Windass has now been offered a new contract.

The former Wigan Athletic and Rangers man has scored 40 goals in 135 total appearances for Wednesday, with 17 assists as well.

Windass scored the goal that sent Sheffield Wednesday into the Championship this time last year, then scoring in each of his side’s last three games as the Owls beat the drop.

The stance Derby County may now take on Josh Windass

Derby County aren’t alone in their admiration of Windass ahead of the summer; the likes of Hull City, Stoke City, and West Brom are also mentioned.

And expect each of the linked teams to have taken notice of Wednesday’s contract offer and to also keep an eye on whether or not he extends his stay at the club.

He’s a Championship-experienced striker who ended the season in good form, so he’d be a good addition for many teams in the second tier, and especially for Derby County.

Warne sees strikers Dwight Gayle, Martyn Waghorn, and James Collins out of contract this summer, with the Rams likely to announce their retained list very soon.

Derby will no doubt have a long list of strikers they want to sign with Windass clearly one of them; expect the Rams to retain their interest, and if Windass rejects his new Sheffield Wednesday contract offer, Warne’s side could quickly pounce.

And it’d need to be quick given the widespread interest in him. But if Warne can get this one over the line then he’ll be signing a tried and tested Championship striker.
