The House overwhelmingly passed a resolution on Friday that denounced efforts to defund the police.

One question is whether it's more surprising how many Democrats voted against the bill, or how many actually voted for it - especially with elections on the horizon.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, the bill was one of several measures GOP lawmakers introduced for National Police Week.

House Republicans noted on Friday that while GOP lawmakers unanimously supported those bills, Democrats voted in big chunks against them.

The anti-defund the police measure passed 337-61.

All 61 votes were by Democrats. They included the usual suspects, such as “Squad” members Reps. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, Cori Bush and Ayanna Pressley, as well as other prominent leftists such as Reps. Maxine Waters, Jamaal Bowman, and Jerry Nadler.

Radical freshman Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost of Orlando was also in that group.

Yet as Business Insider reported - less than six months before the elections - 134 Democrats voted for the measure.

The resolution noted that since “defund the police” became the left’s mantra following the death of George Floyd in May 2020, the nation has witnessed annual records set for the number of officers killed in the line of duty, shot in the line of duty, and simply attacked while performing their duties.

That left-wing movement, the resolution stated, has “opened the door for record criminal activity in cities across the country,” and has “encouraged the public to aggressively and violently engage with law enforcement.”

The resolution called on lawmakers to:

  • condemn calls to defund the police.
  • recognize that law enforcement officers must have the equipment, training, and resources necessary to protect the health and safety of the public as well as their fellow law enforcement officers on the job.
  • exemplify respect for the rule of law and for the law enforcement officers.
  • acknowledge the mental stress and strain law enforcement officers suffer “not only due to the pressures and realities of the job, but also the negative environment in which they often must work.”
  • express “condolences and solemn appreciation to the loved ones of each law enforcement officer who has made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.”
