Film 'legend' who was a 'hero' and 'king' on screen dies - 'One of those rare actors'

Dabney Coleman’s daughter has said the ‘hero’s’ gift in life and in death will be ‘eternal’, after the actor passes away.

The Hollywood star died at his home in Santa Monica, California, on May 16, and tributes have poured in ever since. From the likes of movie stars such as Ben Stiller to others who had the joy of working with him, the character actor paved the way for a new type of performing both on the silver and small screen. Dabney Coleman’s daughter confirmed the news of his death, as the celebrity passed away at the age of 92 before the weekend.

Dabney Coleman’s daughter shared kind words about the star after his death, calling him a ‘king’.

She said: “My father crafted his time here on earth with a curious mind, a generous heart, and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humor that tickled the funny bone of humanity.

“As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery. A teacher, a hero, and a king, Dabney Coleman is a gift and blessing in life and in death as his spirit will shine through his work, his loved ones and his legacy…eternally.”

Coleman’s career spanned more than 60 years, both in film and TV, he was known for Yellowstone, 9 to 5, Tootsie and On Golden Pond, as well as, Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman.

Some of Tinsel Town’s biggest names also penned tributes to him after hearing the news.

Ben Stiller said he ‘created’ the character actor.

The Meet The Parents star wrote on Twitter (X): “The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really – in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor. He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him. Xxx”

Recess: School’s Out star James Wood, who worked with Coleman on the animation, added: “I’ve gone to Dan Tana’s restaurant regularly all my adult life. Dabney Coleman was always there, sitting in booth number one (appropriately), having his trademark steak.

“I had always loved him as an actor, and loved him more as we became friends. #RIPDabneyColeman.”

Screenwriter Tom Holland said: “RIP Dabney Coleman aka Jack Flack. So many great films, he gave us all.”

Saturday Night Live pays tribute to Dabney Coleman after his death

The NBC show, SNL, paid tribute to the actor with a title card at the end of the live Season 49 finale this weekend.

He made an appearance on the comedy show in 1987, and his monologue on YouTube has resurfaced after the news of his death.

Fans believe he was a ‘goddamn legend’, as one said: “Super Sky Point to the great Dabney Coleman, one of those rare actors that it’s possible literally everyone liked. And what wasn’t to like? This sweet b*****d never let us down in any television show or movie he was in.

“A goddamn legend who will be truly missed.”
