What Alejandro Garnacho told his father about a 15-year-old Kobbie Mainoo shows he was destined for greatness

Manchester United have had a topsy-turvy season, but there have been a few undeniable shining lights. That includes the introduction of Andre Onana and the continued rise of Alejandro Garnacho.

Despite a more than shakey start, with an abysmal Champions League campaign, Andre Onana has really cemented his slot as a top player in Manchester United’s first-team squad.

The Cameroonian has saved Erik ten Hag’s side’s bacon more than a few times in the Premier League, which could have certainly led to an even more unfavourable table position.

As for Alejandro Garnacho, the Argentine has continued to dazzle Red Devils fans with his maturity at such a young age. He is now one of the first names on the team sheet and will continue to be for years to come.

Thankfully, the future is bright with players like him knocking around. Similarly, Garnacho and Onana have praise for another one of United’s academy graduates. They think he’s destined for seriously big things around Carrington.

Andre Onana on Kobbie Mainoo

Of course, probably the greatest thing about the 23/24 campaign has to be the emergence of Kobbie Mainoo.

The England midfielder has had a whirlwind of a first season, thrust into the limelight at just 18 years old and is already one of United’s most consistent performers. His future at the club knows no bounds, and his teammates believe so too.

Speaking to Stadium Astro’s YouTube channel, Onana hailed Kobbie stating the following: “I am talking about Kobbie Mainoo. I believe that defining it in those words, that’s very little to give an impression of how good he is. He is a fantastic player.

“He is demonstrating it, and I know that if he continues to work as he is doing, if he carries on the way, he will become an even better player when he is older. That I enjoy every day of training. I can already tell you that.”

Alejandro Garnacho knew Kobbie Mainoo’s potential early

Garnacho was inclined to agree with the shot-stopper, he said: “Yes, as Andre said, he is a fantastic player. I would describe him with the word professional, a player who is also a very good friend.”

He then went on to tell Stadium Astro that he knew Kobbie’s potential from such a young age, just 15 in fact.

“I remember when I came here during my season in Manchester, the first time I saw him play, he was 15 years old and I was 16. And the first game I saw, I came home to my father and told him Kobbie Mainoo at 22 years old will play for United first team.

“Well, he’s 18 now and he is already playing for the first team, so just imagine the potential he has. I am very happy for him, and also because he is a very good friend of mine.”

High praise from his United compatriots, and were definitely on the same page. Kobbie is going to be a very influential player for Manchester United for many years to come, and we cant wait to see what turn his meteoric rise takes next.
