Report: Newcastle United eyeing a move for £19m player who Pep Guardiola says will be 'world class'

It has just emerged, that Newcastle United are eyeing a move for a £19m player this summer transfer window, according to a recent report.

Eddie Howe’s men have endured a topsy-turvy season by all accounts but heading into the final day of the Premier League season, they have the chance to secure European football.

The Magpies have been hit hard by injuries and they’ve found it hard to find consistency, particularly in between the sticks.

Nick Pope has been out for much of the campaign due to a shoulder injury and now it seems the club are on the hunt for his successor this summer.

That said, one player who Pep Guardiola says will be ‘world-class’ has just been linked.

Newcastle eye Burnley goalkeeper James Trafford

Newcastle United are eyeing a move for Burnley’s young shot-stopper James Trafford, according to Alan Nixon.

The Tynesiders have been linked with a move for Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsdale and it seems that deal could materialise in the coming weeks.

But, Howe is keen to bolster his goalkeeping ranks and views Trafford as a long-term option to eventually become the number one.

The 21-year-old, who Burnley signed from Manchester City for £19m last summer, has been inconsistent this term and has lost his place to Arijanet Muric in recent weeks.

Though, evidently, he’s got huge potential and has plenty of room to develop.

Newcastle United don’t need Aaron Ramsdale and James Trafford

Signing two Premier League goalkeepers, both for pretty hefty price tags, just wouldn’t make a lot of sense for Newcastle, who will have to operate shrewdly to stay in line with Financial Fair Play regulations.

Especially considering Ramsdale is only 26, there isn’t a need to start thinking about his successor at this stage.

Surely, it will be one or the other.
