Ange Postecoglou wants to sign English midfielder for Tottenham Hotspur but he could join Aston Villa instead

Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League campaign ends on Sunday afternoon as Ange Postecoglou takes his side to face Sheffield United.

A season which looked so promising in the early months of the Ange Postecoglou era is now in danger of ending on a rather dull note.

Tottenham have lost five of the last six Premier League games and have seen the top four slip away.

Postecoglou has even been left frustrated after sensing that many Tottenham fans actually wanted to lose against Manchester City in midweek, just in order to damage Arsenal’s Premier League title hopes.

Postecoglou wants to breed a winning mentality at Tottenham and clearly feels there is still some way to go.

A result at already-relegated Sheffield United is a must for Tottenham, not only to secure Europa League qualification but to end the season on a high after a difficult spell.

Tottenham Hotspur face Conor Gallagher battle

The attention will soon turn to the summer transfer window – at least after the controversial friendly against Newcastle United in midweek.

Tottenham certainly need new faces this summer and Postecoglou will surely look to bolster his midfield options.

Chelsea ace Conor Gallagher continues to be linked with Tottenham and The Telegraph claim that Postecoglou is a ‘big admirer’ of the midfielder.

The Australian may be personally pushing for Gallagher’s arrival but Tottenham now face a new battle for his signature.

It’s suggested that Aston Villa are now joining the race for Gallagher having beaten Tottenham to the final Champions League spot for next season.

Villa are understood to have a ‘good relationship’ with Chelsea at board level and that could help their pursuit of Gallagher this summer.

Gallagher is poised to captain Chelsea against Bournemouth on Saturday afternoon but there has been no movement on a new contract.

The England international has just one year left on his contract and no new deal means Chelsea may need to cash in this summer.

Chelsea may prefer to sell to Villa

Add in that Gallagher would count as pure profit on the Chelsea books and a sale may become increasingly appealing in the coming weeks.

Tottenham may hope to lure Gallagher across London but Chelsea would no doubt love to avoid selling to Spurs.

The rivalry between the clubs has only grown in recent times and Chelsea would hate to lose a homegrown talent – one who has captained the side regularly this season – to Tottenham.

Villa joining the race gives Chelsea an option to sell Gallagher without sending him to a bitter rival in Tottenham and the strong off-field relationship only enhances that potentially move.

Tottenham won’t give up and Postecoglou has shown the ability to tempt players to Spurs despite offers elsewhere.

Radu Dragusin and Lucas Bergvall are fine examples of that and Postecoglou may well need to pull out all of his tricks in order to bring Gallagher to Tottenham this summer.
