‘Top quality’ ace could cause Klopp all sorts of problems in what could be his final Wolves game - opinion

One Wolves player could cause Liverpool problems on Sunday afternoon in the final game of the 2023/24 Premier League season.

Just 90 minutes remain of Gary O’Neil’s first campaign in charge of Wolves as the Old Gold travel to Merseyside to face Liverpool.

Only one team have won at Anfield this season, as Crystal Palace beat the Reds last month, giving the Midlands club some incentive ahead of the challenging, but not impossible fixture.

Anything but a Liverpool win could cause an upset on Jurgen Klopp’s final game in charge although, O’Neil will be aiming to rain on the German’s parade as Wolves bid to end the 2023/24 calendar on a high.

It’s been a difficult few months for the squad who have won just one of their previous nine in the Premier League, with there now one final chance to impress before the season ends.

While the hosts will be the firm favourites going into the fixture, there’s certainly room for Wolves to cause Liverpool problems, with one player having the opportunity to exploit a key weakness.

Wolves will look at Nelson Semedo to cause Liverpool problems

From Matheus Cunha to Hwang Hee-chan, Wolves have a number of dangermen who could threaten the Reds however, it could be Nelson Semedo who has the best opportunity to cause problems.

The versatile right-back has enjoyed driving forward in O’Neil’s system, exploiting space in behind the opposition to provide support in attack from the right side of defence.

Semedo’s dangerous style of play could be fundamental to Wolves getting chances at Anfield, with Liverpool struggling in that area due to the similar playing style of left-back, Andy Robertson.

While the Scotsman enjoys to get forward, there have been a number of occasions where the full-back is found out of position allowing the opposition to take advantage, an issue that was picked up on by Jamie Carragher.

At the end of last season, the Liverpool legend and Sky Sports pundit tweeted, ‘Andy Robertson goes chasing into midfield & leaves his man, it happens a lot.’

In the Premier League, there aren’t many defenders as successful in attack than Semedo, who ranks in the top 6% of fullbacks for his average of 1.50 successful take-ons per 90, via FBref, telling of the threat he could cause Liverpool this afternoon.

Liverpool clash could be Nelson Semedo’s last game for Wolves

It’s been a ‘top quality’ season for Semedo at Molineux, as he was described by teammate Max Kilman however, there is speculation that the Portugal international’s time in the Midlands could soon be up.

After the summer, the former Barcelona ace will enter the last year of his contract at Wolves and with him sporting a weekly wage of £80k-a-week, now could be the time to part ways with the 30-year-old.

Speaking on the E&S Wolves podcast, journalist Liam Keen had his doubts over Semedo’s stance going into the summer, saying that his future is ‘up in the air’ and adding that he doesn’t think the right-back will ‘be at Wolves next season’.

If the Liverpool clash is his final farewell, the Portugal international could bow out in style by causing havoc on the right side as he has so frequently this campaign.
