The climate activists who temporarily paralysed Munich Airport with a protest action on Saturday have been released following their temporary arrest.

A police spokesman told dpa on Sunday that an investigating judge saw no reason to remand them in custody. The police detained eight activists on Saturday. The personal details of two others who did not enter the airport grounds were established and a connection with the protest action was investigated.

The climate activists have been charged, the spokesman added. The police are assuming dangerous interference with air traffic.

On Saturday, eight activists gained access to the airport site, some of them glued themselves to the runway.

Airport operations had to be suspended for around two hours and 14 aircraft had to land at other airports. Hundreds of thousands of passengers were affected by delays that lasted throughout Saturday.

Politicians from various parties condemned the action.

The climate activists themselves justify their action with the high proportion of climate-damaging greenhouse gas pollution caused by air traffic.
