Russian Black Sea Fleet minesweeper sunk, Ukraine navy says

The Ukrainian armed forces say that they have sunk a Russian warship.

The Ukrainian navy published a photo on the Telegram platform on Sunday depicting the minesweeper Kovrovets, which is part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, with a red cross over it, symbolizing its destruction.

"The Ukrainian navy, together with its sworn brothers, is bringing us ever closer to victory," the online statement reads.

The information could not initially be independently verified.

The Ukrainian navy did not provide any information on how and where the warship was sunk. Vessels of this class typically have a crew of 70.

Since the start of the Russian invasion of Ukraine over two years ago, the Ukrainian military has sunk several Russian warships.

The use of combat drones and speedboats loaded with explosives has now forced the Russian navy to withdraw large and valuable warships from the occupied Crimea peninsula and move them to the east of the Black Sea.
