I saw ‘gifted’ Liverpool player prove why he’ll be vital for Arne Slot in Jurgen Klopp’s last game

Liverpool saw Jurgen Klopp off with a win in the manager’s final game as manager of the club.

The Reds were unable to move from third place in the Premier League, with the day reserved purely for saying goodbye to Klopp.

Under the beating May sun, it was a relatively slow game at Anfield. A far cry from some of ‘heavy metal football’ Liverpool have been known for under the manager.

But after Nelson Semedo got himself sent off for Wolves, a Reds win never really looked in doubt.

Alexis Mac Allister got the ball rolling with a lovely flicked header. As good as the little touch from Mac Allister was though, he wasn’t the star of the goal. That title belonged to a man who ran the show from start to finish on Sunday. If Arne Slot was watching on, he’ll have been impressed.

Harvey Elliott steals the show in Jurgen Klopp’s last game

Although Liverpool have had a bit of a stuttering end to Klopp’s tenure, a handful of players have really stood up.

Perhaps the best of these has been Harvey Elliott. The 21-year-old has kicked Dominik Szoboszlai out of the team to secure his spot in the midfield.

And having registered yet another assist on Monday against Aston Villa, Elliott was at it against on Sunday.

His whipped ball in from the Liverpool right was just begging to be touched in. Mac Allister duly obliged. But it wasn’t just for the goal, Elliott was brilliant throughout the game against Wolves.

The academy graduate simply never rests. Everything good that Liverpool did came from his left-sided midfield role. Elliott linked up brilliantly with Andy Robertson to give Wolves all sorts of trouble. He showed exactly why Jermain Defoe termed him a ‘technically gifted’ player recently.

With Klopp set to depart, it was a culmination of the former Fulham youngster’s progress during the manager’s time. As Slot prepares to come in, he’ll have seen a player who’s itching to be in his starting XI next season.

Harvey Elliott makes Arne Slot point

Elliott has been a huge part of the Liverpool squad this season. Although his start against Wolves was only his 12th of the Premier League season, he’s only missed five games in total.

Even if Slot doesn’t see him as a starter, Elliott’s development demands that he be involved next season.

Having ended the campaign especially strongly, the England U21 international will be desperate to push on again under the new boss.

With another assist under his belt on Sunday, Elliott continued his run of being only bettered by Kevin De Bruyne in that metric in 2024.

As others’ influence has faded on the team, Elliott has kept growing and growing. Sunday’s performance was yet more evidence that the best is yet to come from him at Anfield.
