Ukraine: Dead and injured near Kharkiv after Russian missile attack

At least six people have been killed and 27 others injured in Russian missile strikes on a recreational area near the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, a government official said on Sunday.

Kharkiv's mayor Ihor Terekhov spoke of "terror against peaceful residents, against our right to life, against everything human and just." A pregnant woman was among the dead, he said.

The Kharkiv region, which borders Russia, has been under massive shelling for weeks.

In the wake of repeated attacks, President Volodymyr Zelensky has again called on the international community to provide two Patriot air defence systems to protect the population in Kharkiv.

"The world can stop Russian terror, but the lack of political will on the part of leading politicians must be overcome," Zelensky wrote on the Telegram platform on Sunday. "Two Patriots for Kharkiv would fundamentally change the situation."

Ukrainian media published graphic images of the scene, where people are said to have been relaxing when the missiles struck.

The Ukrainian General Staff reported an escalation of hostilities in the region on Sunday. The media reported that thousands of people had been evacuated to safety.

Ukraine has been defending itself against a Russian invasion for more than two years. Russia had recently expanded its offensive to the Kharkiv region.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that Moscow aims to establish a buffer zone to prevent attacks on Russian territory from Kharkiv.

Injuries in Ukrainian attack on Russian Belgorod region

The Russian border regions have also been under increased attack from Ukrainian forces for months, aiming to disrupt Moscow's supply routes.

At least 11 people were injured in Ukrainian artillery attacks on the southern Russian border region of Belgorod on Sunday, according to reports.

The Russian state agency TASS cited the regional governor saying that three children and teenagers were among the injured.

Multiple rocket launchers caused damage to several residential buildings in the villages of Shebekino and Rzhevka, the report said.

Ukraine says it destroyed Russian Black Sea Fleet warship

The Ukrainian armed forces said that they have sunk a Russian minesweeper.

The Ukrainian navy published a photo on the Telegram platform on Sunday depicting the minesweeper Kovrovets, which is part of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, with a red cross over it, symbolizing its destruction.

"The Ukrainian navy, together with its sworn brothers, is bringing us ever closer to victory," the online statement reads.

The information could not initially be independently verified.

Since the war began, the Ukrainian military has sunk several Russian warships.

The use of combat drones and explosive-laden speedboats has now forced the Russian navy to withdraw its large, valuable warships from the occupied Crimea peninsula to the east of the Black Sea.

Moscow says it has repelled missile attacks on Crimea

Russia intercepted nine US ATACMS missiles overnight over Crimea and also shot down a Ukrainian drone over the peninsula, the Defence Ministry said in a post on Telegram on Sunday morning.

In addition, an enemy drone was shot down there, the ministry said. No damage was reported.

The air defence in Sevastopol had repelled a missile attack, Crimea's Russian-appointed Governor Mikhail Razvozhayev said earlier Sunday on Telegram.

The governor cited the Sevastopol rescue service as saying that no reports of damage to civilian infrastructure had initially been reported, said Razvozhayev.

The ATACMS, or Army Tactical Missile System, is a conventional surface-to-surface weapon that has a longer range than other weapons, such as cannons or rockets.

Moscow annexed Ukraine's Crimea in 2014 in a violation of international law.

Ukraine reports drone attacks on targets including Kiev

The Ukrainian air defence also reported new Russian drone attacks. All 37 missiles were destroyed, it was reported in Kiev.

In the Kherson region, the authorities announced that two people had been killed and two others injured in Russian attacks.

According to the Ukrainian Air Force, the areas affected included Kiev, the Vinnytsia region to the south-west of the capital, the north-eastern Ukrainian border region of Sumy, the central region of Cherkasy, the southern city of Mykolaiv and the port city of Odessa on the Black Sea.

Explosions were reportedly heard across much of the country. There had previously been an air alert in numerous areas.

Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine more than two years ago. Ukraine is defending itself against the invasion with Western military aid.
