What Crystal Palace fans were singing about Aston Villa during the second half of 5-0 thrashing

Aston Villa were demolished by Crystal Palace on the final day of the 2023/24 season, seeing Selhurst Park taunt the Villans after winning 5-0.

It was a day to forget for Aston Villa in South London, as Unai Emery’s side lost 5-0 to Crystal Palace, who were unplayable on the final day.

Oliver Glasner instructed his side to flex their muscles and continue their formidable run in the Premier League, extending their unbeaten run to seven games going into the summer.

The Villans were Palace’s latest victims, ending the campaign as they started it by conceding five goals however, it wasn’t all doom and gloom for the Midlands side.

Sore heads could be the reason for Villa’s lacklustre performance after confirming a fourth-place finish on Tuesday night, securing their spot in the Champions League.

While a party spirit remained in the away end at Selhurst Park as a result of next season’s European plans, the home supporters had something to say about Villa’s display after reinstating themselves as a Champions League club.

Crystal Palace fans taunted Aston Villa during 5-0 final day defeat

Villa will be relieved to hear that Jean-Philippe Mateta won’t be playing in the Champions League next season, after being taught a lesson by the Palace striker on Sunday afternoon.

The Frenchman netted a hattrick against Emery’s side, opening the scoring after just nine minutes to continue his rich streak of form.

It was very nearly a four-goal performance from Mateta had his fourth not been ruled offside, a disallowed goal that prompted the Palace fans to taunt the visitors.

As relayed by journalist Jacob Tanswell, Selhurst Park was singing, ‘Champions League, you’re having a laugh’, questioning Villa’s top-four finish based on their dreadful display in the capital.

It was a humorous exchange between the home supporters and the away fans, who will still be on cloud nine after ending the season in fourth.

Defeat to Crystal Palace showed Unai Emery what is needed this summer

There was nothing to play for against Palace however, there was also an alarming number of poor performers on show for Villa, with the Eagles somewhat unlucky to walk away having only scored five goals.

Losing the game would have never been a favourable result for Emery, with the manager having some players to think about going into the summer based on several frail displays at the back.

For now, the result will be taken with a pinch of salt to close the 2023/24 Premier League chapter, in what has been a remarkable season for Aston Villa aside from starting and ending the campaign with heavy defeats.
