A woman injured during a rescue operation due to flooding in Saarbrücken in Germany's western state of Saarland has died of her injuries, officials said Sunday.

The 67-year-old died on Sunday evening, a Saarbrücken municipal official said.

She had been hit by an emergency vehicle on Friday. The woman reportedly died of her injuries in hospital.

A spokesman for the Saarland interior ministry said the 67-year-old had been involved in an accident during a rescue operation. "She has now succumbed to her injuries in hospital," the spokesman added.

Enormous amounts of rain caused flooding, landslides and overflowing streets and cellars in Saarland and the neighbouring state of Rhineland-Palatinate in recent days.

In Rhineland-Palatinate alone, there were well over 1,000 emergency services call-outs

"I am deeply saddened by this sad news," Saarbrücken's Mayor Uwe Conradt said. He called the "tragic accident" a "terrible tragedy."

The mayor also noted that disaster relief authorities had requested that no further information on the accident or the victim be provided until further notice.
