'That was important': Erik ten Hag pinpoints game-changing Manchester United tactical switch v Brighton

Manchester United ended the season with a victory, beating Brighton and Hove Albion 2-0 on the South Coast as Erik ten Hag ended the campaign in style.

United beat Newcastle United 3-2 in midweek and back that win up with another victory against Brighton on Sunday afternoon.

After a fairly dour first-half display, United seized the advantage with Diogo Dalot opening the scoring.

The Portuguese full back found himself in on goal after a diagonal run in behind the defence and he slotted home like a seasoned striker.

Rasmus Hojlund then added the crucial second, taking Christian Eriksen’s pass before driving home his second goal in just a few days.

United end the season on a high with two victories in a row, with full attention now turning to the FA Cup final against Manchester City next weekend.

Erik ten Hag pinpoints Manchester United turnaround

It looked like United would be ending the season with an all-too-familiar underwhelming display.

Brighton caused major problems and United particularly struggled to deal with Brazilian forward Joao Pedro.

The Seagulls ace caused major problems and ended the game with four successful dribbles and two key passes whilst also going close to scoring in the first half.

United were better in the second half and boss Erik ten Hag has pinpointed a key change.

Ten Hag told BBC Sport that he made a switch at half time, swapping Sofyan Amrabat and Kobbie Mainoo around in terms of their positioning in front of the United back line.

Ten Hag felt that United gained more control of the game at that point, believing that the switch helped United deal with Joao Pedro a little better.

“We changed something at half-time, and after that we had more control. In the end the win is OK,” said Ten Hag.

“We swapped our sixes from the sides, left and right, that was important. We had a lot of problems defending Joao Pedro in the first half but then we had more control and we were better on the ball. You see the goal, it was a movement in behind. The first half was too static,” he added.

Amrabat pushing for FA Cup start

Ten Hag put real faith in Amrabat last summer.

The pair had previously worked together at FC Utrecht in the Netherlands and Ten Hag pounced to take Amrabat on loan with an option to buy.

Amrabat rose to prominence with his displays for Morocco at the 2022 World Cup but hadn’t really hit the same levels with Fiorentina.

That is why United only struck a loan deal for Amrabat rather than committing to a full-time deal immediately.

In truth, Amrabat just hasn’t lived up to those World Cup displays and has looked off the pace in Premier League games.

The 27-year-old improved after the half-time break against Brighton and is knocking on the door for an FA Cup start.

Much will depend on whether Casemiro is needed in defence but Amrabat may have done enough to start against City in what could be his final appearance for United.
