I Kissed a Girl: Hannah’s brother had Edwards Syndrome

Hannah, who hails from Glasgow, Scotland, explains on I Kissed a Girl how she sadly lost her brother, Adam, when she was 12 years old.

She explained to her co-star, Amy: “The day after my brother passed away I had a gymnastics competition. So, my brother was called Adam… He caught pneumonia.”

Hannah said her aunt took her to the hospital one day, and she was expecting it to be a routine visit, “because he was always in and out of the hospital.”

However, she said: “My mum and dad said they were staying the night with him,” the next day they told her: “Adam’s gone.”

She told Amy: “It was really traumatic.”

Adam was born with Edwards Syndrome: “A rare and serious condition which many babies do not survive from their first year,” writes BBC.

Per NHS, “A baby with Edwards’ syndrome has 3 copies of chromosome number 18 instead of 2. This affects the way the baby grows and develops. Having 3 copies of chromosome 18 usually happens by chance, because of a change in the sperm or egg before a baby is conceived.”

“At the time of his death Adam was the longest-living person with the condition in Scotland,” writes BBC.

He was given two weeks to live but sadly passed before he turned 16.

“Adam was a huge part of Hannah’s life and the whole family cherish the years they have had with him in their lives.”

Hannah pays tribute to Adam

Taking to Instagram in February last year, Hannah, 24, shared a tribute post to her late brother 10 years on from his untimely death.

She wrote of how a day doesn’t go by without her thinking about him: “…You’re constantly on my mind and in my heart.”

Hannah’s tribute reads: “I don’t think many people understand the hole you left in our hearts when you left, but I try to fill mine with the 12 years of amazing memories that we made.”

She writes to her late brother: “You’re missed immensely by everyone who had the opportunity to have met you Adam and I really hope you’re having a blast up there. To my second oldest brother and childhood buddy, I love you. I miss you and I’ll hopefully see you one day again. Say hi to all of our grandparents and uncle Paul, I’m sure they are keeping that smile bright p.s keep sending me those signs because I see them everyday.”

After talking about her brother on I Kissed a Girl, fans took to social media to share how it made them emotional.

One fan commented: “Didn’t expect to be crying watching this on a Sunday evening…” and another said: “Hannah has me absolutely sobbing.”
