Sir Alex Ferguson’s telling message to Steve McClaren

The Treble was clinched with a dramatic last-gasp win over Bayern Munich, in which Manchester United scored two late goals to turn around a 1-0 deficit.

Substitute Teddy Sheringham scored the equaliser, which itself sparked a delirious celebration from the players, who were minutes away from a defeat

Sheringham told the documentary that when he walked back to the halfway line, he excitedly told Ole Gunnar Solskjaer that the pair had an extra half hour of extra-time to look forward to, having spent most of the 90 minutes on the bench.

A similar conversation had begun on the touchline, with Sir Alex Ferguson immediately shutting it down.

Assistant coach Steve McClaren recalled: “I’m thinking, brilliant we’ve got a minute to go, and I said, “what you thinking about extra-time?”

He explained how Ferguson responded sharply: “He said this game ain’t over, Steve, sit down”.

The Scot was absolutely spot on. Within moments, Manchester United had forced another corner, providing one final chance to win the game in normal time.

David Beckham fizzed in a corner, which Sheringham flicked on, and Solskjaer extended his boot to direct the ball into the roof of the net.

This was the moment Manchester United’s players, and fans around the world, knew the club’s dreams had come true. There was no hesitation for VAR as you might get in today’s game.

Ferguson’s belief transferred to his team

Sir Alex Ferguson never gave up in his belief Manchester United could, and would, conquer every challenge in front of them.

1998/99 was the season it came together more than any other, with his players embarking on an unbeaten run in all competitions between December and May.

A late comeback against Liverpool in the FA Cup at the start of 1999 laid the blueprint for the turn around against Bayern Munich, and once Manchester United had scored one, the second felt inevitable.

McClaren is currently back at Manchester United, working as an assistant coach under Erik ten Hag, while Ferguson retired in 2013 after a managerial career of unprecedented success, going on to win the Champions League again in 2008.
