How to log into the Wi-Fi on your smartphone without a password

If you want to log in to an encrypted Wi-Fi network, you normally have to enter a password. With a smartphone, however, you can avoid typing anything with this neat trick.

All you need is another smartphone or tablet that is already connected to the network. This works with both Android and iOS devices from Apple. Below we describe the procedure with two Android smartphones.

Firstly, pick up the phone that is already connected to the Wi-Fi. Go to “Settings”, open “Network and Internet” and then “Internet”. At the top of the “Wi-Fi” list is the network you are connected to.

Tap on the cogwheel icon to the right of the name. Then tap on the “Share” icon. You may have to enter the access PIN for the phone at this point or use your biometric login to confirm it’s you. A QR code will then appear.

Now switch to the second smartphone. There, also go to “Settings”, then “Network and Internet” and “Internet” and set the switch next to “Wi-Fi” to “On”. Next, tap on the network you want to connect to, then scroll down a little and tap on “Add device”.

You may now have to enter the PIN for the smartphone again or use a biometric login.

You will then see a camera window. Use this to scan the QR code on the first smartphone. This will transfer the login data for the Wi-Fi to the second phone and you can then log in straight away.
