Gary O'Neil now sends 37-word Instagram message to Wolves fans after first season in charge at Molineux

Gary O’Neil has this morning sent a message to Wolves fans on Instagram, after finishing his first season as manager at Molineux.

Wolves finished off their 2023/24 campaign with a 2-0 defeat to Liverpool at Anfield.

After Nelson Semedo was sent off for the visitors, Liverpool went ahead through Alexis Mac Allister, with Jarell Quansah doubling the hosts’ lead shortly after.

Wolves fans had been hoping to see the side upset the odds and finish with a flourish.

But it wasn’t to be, with form having completely deserted Wolves over the last couple of months.

It has been a tough end to the season, with injuries really hurting Wolves. There have also been a string of poor decisions, costing Wolves crucial points.

In the end, Wolves have finished 14th, which should be considered a success taking into account the chaos of last summer.

This morning, Gary O’Neil has reflected on his first season in charge at Molineux, as he sent a message to the fans on Instagram…

With results having taken a bit of a nosedive, the season has ended at a good time for Wolves.

The players have been suffering in recent weeks, with many having been run into the ground as a result of being in a small squad affected by injuries.

It has been a great effort. Many pundits and fans were tipping Wolves to be in a relegation battle this season, and some even felt they would go down.

But O’Neil came in and got the players on side. He restored belief, and built a strong connection between the players and fans.

It has made for a largely enjoyable season, and this morning, O’Neil has thanked supporters for their efforts this season.

Taking to his official Instagram account, which he doesn’t do too often, O’Neil said: “Thank you for your fantastic support @wolves fans. A season where we stuck together through adversity and incredible highs.

“Enjoy the summer, come back revitalised and ready to commit to making Molineux special again next season. Gary.”

A fantastic job by O’Neil

Gary O’Neil has done a brilliant job in his first season at Wolves.

The odds were well and truly against him when he came in just a few days before the season started.

Several top players had already departed, he’d had no pre-season, the mood around Molineux was low, and everything pointed to a relegation battle.

But he believed, and the players and fans followed suit.

Wolves have ended up finishing 14th which is slightly disappointing considering where the team were a couple of months ago.

But perspective is required. Wolves have been hit very hard by injuries and poor VAR decisions. If someone had offered 14th at the start of the season, many would have taken that.

O’Neil now has a full summer to prepare the team for next season. And many will be optimistic about 2024/25.
