Daniel Podence scores sublime goal in 2-2 draw that even left opposition fans applauding - journalist

Wolves star Daniel Podence scored a truly outstanding goal on Sunday in Olympiacos’ final league game of the season.

The 28-year-old was featuring for the final time in the Super League for the Greek giants against Panathinaikos.

It has been a fantastic season for Podence, who has made 46 appearances, scoring 15 goals and making 13 assists. The star will have one more outing this term, when Olympiacos face Fiorentina on Wednesday.

Podence, who Wolves looked to sell last summer, has been on loan with Olympiacos and absolutely thrived.

He has regularly stood out, and that was the case once again on Sunday, he scored a truly sublime goal…

Wolves fans know full well that Podence is capable of doing special things on a football pitch.

Previously, he has drawn comparisons with Eden Hazard for being similar to the Belgian stylistically and physically.

The star loves a trick, and was arguably the most technically gifted player back at Wolves.

This amazing technical ability was on full display on Sunday as Olympiacos took on Panathinaikos in their final game of the domestic season.

Olympiacos were losing 2-0, when the Wolves man took centre stage. He carried the ball in from the right side up to the edge of the penalty area, before chopping inside and then back out again.

Then, Podence lifted the ball beautifully over the goalkeeper and into the far corner.

It was undoubtedly something right out of Eric Cantona’s catalogue. And it was also not too dissimilar to the goal that Ruben Neves scored in a 4-0 win over Watford a couple of seasons ago with the way thee ball sailed into the far top corner.

As per journalist Kostas Lianos on X, the goal was so good that even some Panathinaikos supporters applauded. This prompted Podence to take a bow.

Podence then actually picked up a second yellow card in the 89th minute, leading to him being sent off.

Podence a talent, but his Wolves days seem over

This is an outrageous goal from Podence, whose technical ability has never, ever been in question.

Wolves fans have seen him produce moments of magic several times at Molineux. But sadly, he always struggled to show it on a consistent basis.

As amazing a footballer as Podence can be, he also has the tendency to frustrate. Often, he can overplay and when his tricks do not come off it can lead to fans getting on his back.

But what a seriously talented player he is on his day.

As far as Podence returning to Wolves’ first-team is concerned, it is probably not too likely. Olympiacos’ vice-president admitted last week that he wanted to keep hold of the player permanently.

The narrative has long been that he doesn’t really want to return to Wolves, and Gary O’Neil is not about to try and make players stick around who don’t want to be at Molineux, no matter what they may be able to offer.
