Nationwide building society applies to repair ram-raided Sawbridgeworth branch as police continue investigation

Police are continuing to review CCTV footage of an audacious early morning ram-raid on a town centre bank and have yet to make any arrests.

Crooks struck at Nationwide Building Society in Knight Street, Sawbridgeworth on Tuesday April 23 and video footage taken by a resident showed them using a telehandler forklift truck to rip the cash machine from the building.

The machine was lowered on to a pick-up truck, stolen from the nearby car park of the George IV pub, before the gang of at least three men drove away.

One of the gang was pictured hoisting the ATM onto the back of a pick-up stolen from the George IV along Knight Street

A pick-up similar to that used in the raid was found later that day burned out in Cambridgeshire with the cash machine reported to have been found torched beside it.

Despite the owner of the truck reportedly confirming it was his vehicle that had been found, police are still investigating.

A Herts police spokesperson told the Indie on Monday they were “still awaiting the vehicle examiner’s report” to confirm it.

The shop front of Nationwide was badly damaged after the ram-raid

The Nationwide, the town’s only bank, is still to reopen, but a planning application has been submitted to East Herts Council to replace the cash machine and repair the shop front.
