Report: Newcastle United are interested in signing 'terrific' midfielder from Aston Villa this summer

While Aston Villa have just replicated Newcastle United’s success and qualified for the Champions League, they might have to sell one of their top players.

The 2022/23 season was incredible for Newcastle United as they broke into the top four, and now Aston Villa have done the same. Unai Emery has done a brilliant job, as they become the latest Premier League club to upset to the ‘big six’.

But, like Newcastle, Villa might be held back by profit and sustainability rules. Despite making it into the Champions League, they might need to sell someone so that they can comply with PSR.

And that could give the Magpies a chance to sign a player they had a look at during the January transfer window.

Eddie Howe looked at Aston Villa star in January

At the start of the year, Newcastle were in the market for a midfielder, and were linked with signing Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa.

It was an incredibly exciting rumour, as Ramsey is a ‘terrific‘ player and someone who should become an England international in the coming years.

The hope was that he would achieve that at St James’ Park, but talk of a move to Tyneside died down once it emerged that the Magpies could not afford him.

Newcastle United big fans of Jacob Ramsey

Now he is on Eddie Howe’s radar again, with the Telegraph reporting that Newcastle are one of three Premier League clubs that admire Ramsey. The other two clubs that are named are Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool.

Villa are at risk of having to sell Ramsey, and the fact he is an academy product would mean he would go down as pure profit for them if they were to let him leave.

That would be a devastating blow for Villa, while the Telegraph add that Ramsey does not want to depart.

Why Ramsey is unlikely to sign for Newcastle

While the 22-year-old is attracting interest from the likes of Newcastle, the report states that they might be out of luck – despite Villa needing to cash in on someone.

The Telegraph report that while Ramsey does have admirers, he will likely cost too much.

That is a shame, as Ramsey is a very talented player who would do very well in black and white. There was a lot of buzz about him in January, and the reaction would be similar if Newcastle were to make a serious move this summer.

However, the need for a player like Ramsey has subsided, especially now that Joelinton has signed a new contract at St James’ Park. On top of that, it will not be long before Sandro Tonali is available again.

Suddenly Newcastle’s midfield options will be looking much healthier, which means that a player like Ramsey is not required.

But while he might not leave Aston Villa, the Telegraph suggest that Diego Carlos could. That is a name that Toon fans will know well, as the Magpies came incredibly close to signing him during the first transfer window after the takeover.
