Report: Sean Dyche is plotting summer move for £21m player who James Rodriguez wanted Everton to sign in 2020

Everton are poised to not have much to spend this summer, but for the fanbase, this has become commonplace.

After all, the Toffees’ finances have regressed dramatically over the last five or so years, orchestrated by Farhad Moshiri’s failures from the top.

The Iranian came to Merseyside in 2016 with a dream, but a lack of a plan for how to achieve that goal proved costly. Now, they are dealing with the repercussions of those ghastly errors, with last season where they truly reared their ugly head.

Two separate points deductions threatened to send them into the Championship once and for all, but Sean Dyche and his resolute squad were not going to let that happen.

Kevin Thelwell will want to add to this group of impressive performers, but he will face obstacles that he has already outlined.

Everton want to sign Davinson Sanchez

Perhaps, in order to facilitate some signings, a major sale might be needed.

Jarrad Branthwaite’s future at Everton is one really up in the air, whilst Amadou Onana’s transfer out of Goodison Park is also one that seems increasingly likely.

So, replacements will be needed to ensure that they do not suffer a huge drop-off.

Well, one report courtesy of CaughtOffside has now detailed a potential alternative for the former, suggesting that they could now make a move for former Tottenham Hotspur struggler Davinson Sanchez.

Although the Colombian might have struggled in his last stint in the Premier League, a move to Galatasaray has reignited his career, and he is now valued at a reported €25m (£21m).

It states: ‘Manchester United have an interest in a potential transfer move for Everton centre-back Jarrad Branthwaite this summer, and the Toffees already have a possible replacement in mind in the form of Davinson Sanchez.’

Everton have that Colombian connection

Were Everton to snag Sanchez, it would add to the club’s ever-growing alumni of Colombian superstars.

That contingent was mainly propped up by Yerry Mina, who the club acquired from Barcelona back in 2018.

The affable giant, who fast became a fan favourite for his unique personality, was one of the club’s best defenders when fit.

However, the problem was that he never was.

James Rodriguez suffered from a similar problem, but his brief stint was far more star-studded than Mina’s.

Brought in by Carlo Ancelotti, the world-class playmaker shocked the world when he joined Everton, and thrived for a season.

In fact, back in 2020, the 32-year-old even pushed Everton to sign Sanchez too. Perhaps things could now come full circle.
