What is the Peace Summit

Ukraine announced its intention to hold the Global Peace Summit last year. To prepare for such an event, five meetings of advisors to the heads of state were held regarding the Ukrainian formula for peace - in Denmark, Saudi Arabia, Malta, Switzerland, and Qatar.

The outcome of such meetings will be a summit of world leaders, which will take place in the Swiss resort of Bürgenstock.

The Office of the President emphasized that the Peace Summit should serve as a platform for dialogue on ways to achieve a just peace between Russia and Ukraine, based on the UN Charter and international law.

The Ukrainian government expects not only the participation of Western countries, which have been allies of Ukraine since the beginning of the full-scale war, but also states of the Global South that adhere to "neutrality."

In particular, Kyiv wants to involve the most influential countries of the Global South, such as China, India, Brazil, and others.

As of today, it is known that more than 50 states have confirmed their intention to participate. Most of them are Western countries.

What are the goals of the first Summit

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has already stated that the first Peace Summit plans to discuss three main topics:

\- energy and nuclear security;

\- free navigation;

\- prisoner exchange (exchange of all for all and return of deported children).

After, if the above-mentioned topics are endorsed by the participants of the Peace Summit, it is planned to identify the states that will be responsible for the success of each of them.

Moreover, Bloomberg, citing an unnamed source, wrote that one of the key goals of the summit is to discuss how to involve Russia in the peace process.

The source also specified that Ukraine has focused on a narrow range of issues at the first summit in order to engage as many countries as possible, including China.

Meanwhile, the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in response to a request from Dzerkalo Tyzhnia, noted that the global goal of the Peace Summit is to pave the way for the future peace process between Ukraine and Russia. Therefore, practical elements are planned to be developed.

Russia was not invited to the first Peace Summit. Ukraine only allows the participation of the aggressor country from the second summit onwards, when a peace plan can be developed.
