Aston Villa could now rectify £26m Steven Gerrard blunder in bid to battle PSR concerns

Aston Villa are said to be open to offers for a player signed when Steven Gerrard was the man in charge.

The club are a far-cry from the one Gerrard left as he was sacked in 2022 with the club facing a relegation battle.

Unai Emery came in and has revolutionised the Villa Park outfit, guiding them to the Champions League as well as a run to the Europa Conference League semi-final this season.

Despite securing a spot in Europe’s elite club competition for next season, Aston Villa are expected to have to make sales this summer in order to bring marquee signings in so that they comply with the Premier League’s spending rules.

Aston Villa will listen to offers for Diego Carlos this summer

With that in mind, it is now being reported that Villa are willing to listen to offers for Diego Carlos once the transfer window opens.

The 31-year-old was only signed for the midlands club in July 2022, with the £26 million paid to Sevilla to secure his services a sizeable deal at the time.

Now, The Telegraph are reporting that Villa could sell the Brazilian to relieve some of the pressure they could face as a result of PSR rules, with the £50 million the club has earned through qualifying for the Champions League not enough to ensure they comply.

The defender’s £100k-per-week wages are said to be a key reason Villa are open to the possibility of an exit, with Italian giants AC Milan the club showing the most interest currently.

Diego Carlos sale makes sense for all parties

It is fair to say it hasn’t worked out quite as Villa or Carlos would have hoped when the centre-back made the move in 2022.

That is not entirely Carlos’ fault, with the defender suffering an achilles tendon rupture just two league games into his Villa career which only say him feature once more in his debut campaign in England.

The uncapped Brazilian has again had injury problems this season, starting just 20 Premier League games as he has also struggled to find enough consistency to guarantee a starting spot.

In total, Carlos has played just 41 games in all competitions since signing for the club two years ago according to Transfermarkt.

The defender’s lack of availability combined with his age and lack of consistency mean that if there is interest in Carlos’ services a sale would make sense.

Considering the £100k-a-week he earns per week is the same as Pau Torres and Tyrone Mings according to Capology, and more than the likes of Matty Cash and Ezri Konsa, if a decent offer comes in Villa could be foolish to turn it down.
