COLUMBUS — It was reported last month. Now it’s official. Ohio State will open the 2024-25 season against Texas in Las Vegas for the Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame Series.
The game will take place on Nov. 4 in T-Mobile Arena, the home of the NHL’s Vegas Golden Knights.
It will be part of College Basketball’s Opening Night 2024, an event that will also feature a highly-anticipated women’s basketball showdown between defending national champion South Carolina and Michigan that same night in Vegas.
Tip times and television information will be released at a later date.
As for Ohio State-Texas, the schools have met only once before, and that was in a second-round NIT game on March 17, 1986. That day, the Buckeyes beat the Longhorns, 71-65, in St. John Arena.

Texas is coming off back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances under head coach Rodney Terry, but the Longhorns watched their third- and fourth-leading scorers — guard Tyrese Hunter and forward Dillon Mitchell, respectively — transfer this offseason. They also graduated top-two leading scorers, guard Max Abmas and forward Dylan Disu, both of whom were in their fifth and final years.
That said, Texas brought in a wave of transfers headlined by former Arkansas guard Tramon Mark. Plus, the Longhorns signed a 2024 class that clocked out 11th in the On3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings. That class is spearheaded by the No. 5 overall prospect in this year’s cycle, shooting guard Tre Johnson.
Similar to Texas, Ohio State has had to turn to the portal this offseason to fill some holes left by the departure of starters from last season. New head coach Jake Diebler and his staff have added four transfers so far this offseason and have one scholarship spot remaining.
Notably, Ohio State will also complete its home-and-home series with Texas A&M next season. The Aggies came to Columbus and defeated the Buckeyes, 73-66, on Nov. 10. Now, Diebler and his new-look squad will head to College Station during the 2024-25 campaign.
Before that, though, the Buckeyes will open the season against Texas in Las Vegas.
