Every Newcastle player rated for the 2023/24 season: 'World class' player shines but £4m man is a major disappointment

The 2023/24 season is over for Newcastle United, meaning it is time to reflect on what felt like a very long campaign.

And it technically has not actually ended for the Magpies, with Saturday’s FA Cup final set to determine whether or not Newcastle United have qualified for Europe. If Man City win, Eddie Howe’s side will compete in the Europa Conference League next season.

That will be a great achievement given how tough this season has been. Injuries have massively hindered Newcastle, as has Sandro Tonali’s suspension.

But there have been plenty of promising performers, and these are Geordie Boot Boys’ 2023/24 Newcastle United player ratings (only including players who have made at least five appearances).

Martin Dubravka 3/10

Martin Dubravka played a lot more than he probably expected this season. The £4million man came into the side after Nick Pope suffered a shoulder injury, but really struggled to fill the void left by the England international.

Newcastle were a much weaker side with Dubravka in goal, with the Slovakian unable to act as a sweeper keeper like Pope does. It massively hurt the way the Magpies defended, and led to a lot of needless goals being conceded.

Nick Pope 6/10

It was great to have him back against Brentford – it is just a shame Nick Pope was not available sooner.

But there were still low moments for Pope when he was fit, with the 32-year-old not quite as good as he was last season. There were a few shaky moments at the beginning of the 2023/24 campaign, which is why he does not get a better mark.

Kieran Trippier 7.5/10

Sadly for Kieran Trippier, this season will be more remembered for the mistakes he made in black and white. He made quite a few errors during the winter months, and even admitted that he was not playing well enough.

But it was not a bad season at all for Trippier. He once again impressed, and was a massive influence in the final third with 11 assists.

Tino Livramento 7.5/10

The future is bright at right-back. It is very clear that Tino Livramento is more than capable of replacing Trippier when the times comes.

The 21-year-old has been really impressive during his debut year on Tyneside, and even excelled at left-back when called upon.

Emil Krafth 6/10

Another player who has probably played more than anticipated. Whether it was right-back or centre-back, Emil Krafth proved why he is a valuable member of the Newcastle United squad with some decent displays when the Magpies’ defensive options were stretched.

Sven Botman 6/10

An injury-ridden second season as a Newcastle United player. Sven Botman missed 28 games with two different knee injuries, and the most recent one could keep him out for the rest of 2024.

His best game was probably the 0-0 draw with AC Milan, while he was not the same player when he came back after the first knee injury.

Fabian Schar 9/10

Fabian Schar is without a doubt Newcastle’s best defender this season. The Switzerland international has been tremendously consistent, appearing in 47 of the Magpies’ 51 games. An outside contender for Newcastle’s player of the season award.

Jamaal Lascelles 7/10

The captain played a lot due to Botman’s injury, yet also ended the season with an ACL problem.

Jamaal Lascelles did really well when he first came into the side, and played an important role in one of Newcastle’s most famous nights ever – that 4-1 win over PSG in the Champions League.

Dan Burn 7/10

Dan Burn has redeemed himself after a very strong end to the season. He was asked to play at centre-back and looked much more comfortable, after struggling at left-back earlier in the year. That was down to a lack of pace, while it was clear that he rushed back from a broken back. For all his struggles, you cannot question his commitment.

Lewis Hall 6/10

An interesting first season as a Newcastle player for Lewis Hall. It has ended in tremendous fashion, with the 19-year-old really finding his feet in black and white. It took a long time for Eddie Howe to trust him, but it appears that he now has a bright future on Tyneside.

Paul Dummett 5/10

It is unclear what the future holds for Paul Dummett, with his contract due to expire. He made just eight appearances this season, with some impressive Carabao Cup displays at the beginning of the campaign.

However, those highs are probably counteracted by the lows of giving away that penalty against Everton.

Matt Targett 3/10

34 games missed through injury says it all. Matt Targett looked alright when he did play, with one of his best cameos coming against Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League. But he simply has not been fit often enough.

Bruno Guimaraes 9.5/10

A Newcastle United superstar and talisman, it has been another brilliant season for Bruno Guimaraes. He ended it in style against Brentford, proving once again why he really is worth £100million.

Hopefully that is not his last competitive appearance for the club, with Newcastle desperate to keep him at St James’ Park.

Joelinton 7/10

Joelinton is another player whose season has been ruined by injury. It could have been a very different campaign had he not suffered that thigh problem during the FA Cup win over Sunderland in January.

But the 27-year-old was always excellent when he was fit, and it is great to see that he has signed a new contract with the club. He will be keen to kick on after a frustrating year.

Sean Longstaff 5/10

The 2023/24 season has been extremely challenging for Sean Longstaff. He has played through the pain barrier while so many of his teammates were unavailable, while he has not been able to have the same impact as he did during the 2022/23 campaign.

Longstaff has not had a good year, with the only saving grace being his eight goals from midfield.

Sandro Tonali 4/10

It all started so well for Sandro Tonali, as he enjoyed a perfect debut for Newcastle United. That was one of just 12 appearances for Newcastle so far, with the Italy international receiving a 10-month ban for betting in October.

This will have been the toughest season of Tonali’s career, but big things are expected when his suspension is lifted in late August.

Joe Willock 4/10

No player has missed more games through injury for Newcastle United this season than Joe Willock. He missed 37 games, which has proven to be a massive blow.

A big response is required next season, with Eddie Howe hoping he can get over his Achilles problem in time for pre-season.

Elliot Anderson 5.5/10

Is that another Newcastle United player whose season has been crippled by injury? Yes, it certainly is.

This was meant to be Elliot Anderson’s breakthrough year as a Toon player, but instead we have only seen snippets of his immense talent. Maybe next year will be his year.

Lewis Miley 7/10

Anderson’s injury, as well as the others Newcastle suffered in midfield, gave Lewis Miley a chance to shine – and he certainly took it.

The teenager was a revelation in black and white, with Miley holding his own against the Premier League’s best and in the Champions League. What a talent we have in our ranks, and he is still only 18-years-old.

Matt Ritchie 5/10

An important figure behind the scenes and the scorer of an important equaliser against Bournemouth, Matt Ritchie has had to play more than he should have this season. He made 17 appearances, while he also got his HGV licence.

Jacob Murphy 6/10

A mixed bag of a season for Jacob Murphy, whose tally of eight assists is nothing to be sniffed at. He has enjoyed some great moments and is a popular member of the squad, but he is in danger of being replaced this summer.

Miguel Almiron 5/10

He was immense during the 2022/23 season, but, like Longstaff, Miguel Almiron has regressed. The Paraguayan has been nowhere near as impactful in the final third, and looks likely to leave St James’ Park.

Harvey Barnes 6/10

As Harvey Barnes said himself, his first season as a Newcastle player has been one of ups and downs. The highs have to be the number of goal contributions he got (eight), some of which were massively important.

But he has not been a regular starter, and will hope to have a bigger impact next year. To do that, Barnes must stay injury free after missing 28 games.

Anthony Gordon 9.5/10

For me, Anthony Gordon has been Newcastle’s player of the season. He has been so reliable, largely because he has always been available. He only missed three games during the entire campaign, and two of those were because of suspension.

Gordon has taken his game to a completely new level, hitting double figures for goals and assists in the Premier League. The 23-year-old truly is a superstar now, and that is down to his hard work and Eddie Howe’s coaching.

Callum Wilson 6/10

This has been an incredibly frustrating season for Callum Wilson, who did manage to reach double figures. He scored 10 goals in all competitions, but will be disappointed with that tally.

Once again, the 32-year-old has not been able to stay fit, and it is why this could end up being his final season for Newcastle United.

Alexander Isak 9.5/10

I think Gordon has been Newcastle’s player of the season, but you could easily give it to Alexander Isak as well.

The 24-year-old has established himself as a ‘world class‘ striker, boasting 25 goals in all competitions. He is the first Toon player to score more than 20 goals in a top flight season since Alan Shearer in 2004, and is proving exactly why Eddie Howe is right to build his team around him.

It has been a special season for a special player.
