’The likes of Aston Villa’: Michael Owen makes defiant claim after Manchester City win another title

Aston Villa have played a huge part in Manchester City winning the Premier League title this season.

At one point, it looked like it was a three-way race for English football’s main crown, with Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester City locking horns with one another.

But in the end, the last-day battle commenced with Pep Guardiola’s side downing Arsenal for the second season in a row.

Unai Emery’s Aston Villa were the only team to do the double over Arsenal and they helped Manchester City along the way.

Of course, they also did Aston Villa a favour because their recent win over Tottenham confirmed the club’s return to the Champions League.

With Manchester City now winning four titles in a row, it has been pure dominance from Guardiola and no one can see a stop.

Michael Owen stated that, as long as Guardiola is in the Premier League, it’s going to be ‘very difficult to move him off his perch’, as he told Premier League Productions (19/05/24 at 7:20 pm)

The former striker name-dropped a few teams that are ‘chomping at Manchester City’s heels’, including Villa and how they are ‘improving’ heading into the new campaign.

Manchester City’s dominance in the Premier League

“That’s going to be the difficulty,” said Owen on teams now trying to get over Manchester City.

“Arsenal are making great strides. Liverpool have got a new manager. Chelsea are flying. Manchester United still have a way to go. The likes of Aston Villa are improving. Tottenham are improving. They will all be chomping at their heels.

“However, Pep Guardiola, for as long as he is at this club, it’s going to be very, very difficult to move him off his perch.”

Aston Villa next season

Every campaign, bar the unforgettable one with Steven Gerrard, Villa have improved under Nassef Sawiris and Wes Edens.

But the next campaign is going to be by far the toughest, even though it has been a largely positive this season.

Believe it or not, trying to jump from fourth to third is going to be much harder than going from seventh to Champions League.

The gap between fourth-placed Villa and third-placed Liverpool was a staggering 14 points, in comparison to eight points separating fourth and Manchester United in eighth spot.
