Tokyo stocks open higher after U.S. tech issues advance

Tokyo stocks opened higher Tuesday as technology shares tracked gains by their U.S. counterparts, with the tech-heavy Nasdaq index finishing at a new high.

In the first 15 minutes of trading, the 225-issue Nikkei Stock Average rose 165.00 points, or 0.42 percent, from Monday to 39,234.68. The broader Topix index was up 11.02 points, or 0.40 percent, at 2,779.06.

On the top-tier Prime Market, gainers were led by insurance, nonferrous metal, and electric power and gas issues.

At 9 a.m., the U.S. dollar fetched 156.40-41 yen compared with 156.22-32 yen in New York and 155.73-74 yen in Tokyo at 5 p.m. Monday.

The euro was quoted at $1.0859-0863 and 169.83-91 yen against $1.0852-0862 and 169.64-74 yen in New York and $1.0872-0874 and 169.32-36 yen in Tokyo late Monday afternoon.
