Auburn offers 2028 RB Chris Davis III, son of former Tigers DB, ‘Kick Six’ star Chris Davis

Auburn extended an offer to a familiar name on Monday, one that provided the Tigers with an iconic moment that will live in college football infamy forever.

Hugh Freeze and Co. have offered Trussville (Ala.) Hewitt-Trussville running back Chris ‘CJ’ Davis III, the son of former Auburn defensive back Chris Davis, he announced via X.

The elder Davis notoriously ran back a missed field goal 109 yards to defeat Alabama in the 2013 Iron Bowl. The play, known as the ‘Kick Six’, continued a dream season for the Tigers that resulted in an SEC Championship victory and a National Championship appearance.

Davis played in 46 games for Auburn from 2010-2013, tallying 199 total tackles, 25 pass deflections and over 300 return yards on special teams. He went on to play three seasons in the NFL for the Chargers and 49ers.

Davis III is currently in the 2028 cycle and is entering his freshman season at Hewitt-Trussville. He’s now reported four Power Four offers, the first of which came from UCF and former Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn — who coached the elder Davis on The Plains. Arkansas and Florida State have also already offered.

Rankings are still far away for the 2028 cycle, but the younger Davis’ offer sheet is already featuring some impressive programs. Auburn is now in the mix early for the legacy recruit.

Looking at the current 2025 cycle, Auburn is off to a hot start and currently ranks No. 9 in theOn3 Industry Team Recruiting Rankings with commitments from 11 prospects.

Highland Home (Ala.) four-star EDGE Jakaleb Faulk headlines the class as a top-200 recruit alongside Winona (Miss.) four-star linebacker Tyler Lockhart, Birmingham (Ala.) Parker four-star defensive lineman Jourdin Crawford, Opelika (Ala.) four-star defensive lineman Malik Autry and Fairburn (Ga.) Langston Hughes four-star offensive tackle Tavaris Dice.

Buford (Ga.) four-star cornerback Devin Williams and Mobile (Ala.) Willamson four-star offensive tackle Carde Smith round out the list of blue-chippers.

Lockhart made a surprise committment to Auburn on May 6. Last month, he was a standout to On3 Director of Scouting and Rankings Charles Power at the Under Armour Nashville camp. The blue-chipper’s playmaking ability helped him stand out in an impressive field.

“In a setting that isn’t typically favorable for linebackers, Tyler Lockhart managed to make some nice plays while flashing intriguing upside,” Power wrote. “The Winona (Miss.) High product has a great frame with plus length. He moved well in drills and managed to make some plays in 1-on-1’s. Lockhart closed quickly on a route in the flats and later stayed in-phase defending a wheel route, leading to a pass breakup.”
