Steve Cooper now rejects chance to return to football after Nottingham Forest sacking

Steve Cooper was sacked by Nottingham Forest in December and now he’s rejected the chance to return to management.

The 44-year-old was handed his papers after an alarming run of form and replaced by Nuno Espirito Santo.

Previously, Crystal Palace have been linked with a move for Cooper, but they’ve now hit the jackpot with Oliver Glasner.

It would appear as though Cooper is being extremely selective over his next role and now he’s rejected the chance to return to work in the EFL.

Steve Cooper rejects chance to take over at Norwich City

The Canaries were battered by Leeds United in the second leg of their play-off semi-final last week – and sacked David Wagner afterwards.

According to The Sun, they sounded out Cooper for the managerial position but he’s turned it down.

This is perhaps a bit of a surprise given that the manager has a great pedigree when it comes to the Championship.

Cooper led Swansea to back-to-back play-off campaigns, losing in the semi-final and then the final.

With Forest, it was a case of third time lucky as Cooper took the Reds from the bottom of the Championship into the Premier League.

In the team’s first campaign back in the top flight, Cooper kept the team in the league and earned a chance to begin the 2023/24 season.

However, following one win in 15 games, Cooper was sacked and left Forest with a 38% win ratio from 108 games in charge. )

Cooper holding out for Premier League job

Forest fans will forever be indebted for the work that Cooper did at Forest.

However, it was time to go and it would appear that the manager is enjoying his time out of football at the moment.

Given that he’s decided to reject Norwich, it would appear that he’s waiting for a Premier League job to come up.

That doesn’t sound unreasonable but his work with Forest in the Premier League hardly gives him a glowing reference.

Although he did manage to keep the team in the top-flight, Forest won once in over 13 matches on three occasions in the Premier League under Cooper.

Still, he is a top coach and that reputation will perhaps earn him a crack at some point in the Premier League.

With one of the top clubs in the EFL being rejected by Cooper, it will now be fascinating to see where the sacked Forest boss does end up.
