Danny Murphy thinks Arne Slot could immediately change one Liverpool player’s position after taking over

Arne Slot has been confirmed as the man to take over from Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.

The Dutch manager had long been seen as the coach who would take the reigns once Klopp’s time at Anfield came to an end.

And after the legendary German waved goodbye to his adoring public on Sunday, Liverpool moved quickly to announce Slot’s arrival.

Already, the 45-year-old is said to be working on his own plans for the Reds’ squad. Darwin Nunez, for example, has been named as a player Slot has pin-pointed for a big role.

There will be excitement over how the former Feyenoord boss plans to get the best out of Nunez after a difficult end to the season. But according to former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy, there’s another player who could have fresh life breathed into his game, too.

Trent Alexander-Arnold set for change in position

There is so much intrigue surrounding Slot’s appointment. It has obviously been many years since Liverpool found themselves in this position.

Only one current Reds player has ever been at the club without Klopp; Joe Gomez.

As a result, we’ve little idea over how the group could look with a new man at the helm. Slot is likely to have his own ideas about a number of Liverpool players.

One who may be the beneficiary of a change in tack is Trent Alexander-Arnold. Mystery currently surrounds the right-back’s future, with his contract running down. But according to Murphy, he expects Trent to sign a new deal and perhaps even move into midfield under Slot.

“The sensible thing would be to wait,” the pundit told TalkSPORT about the contract situation. “It’s highly unlikely but the new manager might not fancy him at right-back, defensively. I think that’s highly unlikely.

“If he doesn’t fancy him at right-back he might play him in midfield. I think we might see Trent sign because he’ll have a sit down with the manager and I think he might say to him ‘you’re going to play in midfield.'”

How Liverpool could line-up under Arne Slot

Let’s assume for a moment that Slot does move Alexander-Arnold into a permanent midfield role. What could that mean for the current Liverpool line-up?

Obviously, the Reds are planning one or two moves in the summer transfer market. That could have an impact on things.

But working with what we’ve got for now, we’d expect Liverpool to line-up a little like this with the Dutchman at the helm.

Alisson, Bradley, Konate, Van Dijk, Robertson, Alexander-Arnold, Szoboszlai, Mac Allister, Salah, Nunez, Diaz.

That would see Trent sitting in a two with Dominik Szoboszlai, with Alexis Mac Allister pushed into the No.10 role. Conor Bradley fills in at right-back. It’s an exciting looking team, let’s see if it ever happens.
