Ollie Watkins makes 2024/25 season promise that Aston Villa fans will absolutely love

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has made a promise to fans after the successes of the 2024/25 season, sharing one element of the campaign that hasn’t surprised him.

What a season it’s been for Aston Villa and what a season it’s been for Ollie Watkins.

Securing a fourth-place finish in the Premier League confirmed that the Villans will be playing in the Champions League next campaign, taking another step forward in their progression under Unai Emery.

The boss has improved so many elements at the club both on and off the pitch, with Watkins’ development as a player being one, as the 28-year-old hit the form of his life over the 2023/24 calendar.

For all of the highs that the Villa talisman experienced this season, the striker has already made a promise to fans ahead of next term.

Recording 32 goal contributions in 37 Premier League appearances saw Watkins have an involvement in a remarkable 42% of Villa’s goals scored in the league in 2023/24.

While the forward didn’t take home the Golden Boot with his 19 goals, he did collect the Premier League Playmaker of the Season award for the 13 assists he secured, telling of the areas where his game has improved.

Despite the outstanding form shown by the Englishman, Villa’s star man admitted he was ‘not surprised’ at the levels he hit this term, as well as making a promise to fans ahead of next season, via Express and Star.

“It had been an aim [20 goals] but there is always next season. I am not surprised by how well I have done this season because of all the hard work I have put in.

“Has it been a breakthrough? Yeah. But next season will be better, I am sure of that.”

Watkins looked certain to break Christian Benteke’s scoring record at Villa in a single Premier League season, as Emery’s star equalled the Belgian’s 19 goals with five games to go.

It’s a testament to Watkins’ mentality to see him wanting more after a season as successful as the 2023/24 campaign, with even greater levels there to be hit.

Next term, the England international will hope to not only break Villa’s Premier League scoring record, which requires 20 goals in a season but will also have the potential to become Villa’s all-time leading goalscorer in the Premier League.

Gabby Agbonlahor currently holds the record with 74 goals, with Watkins creeping up on 59 goals, needing only 15 to equal the record, and 16 to break it.

For now, the Villa talisman’s focus will solely be on the upcoming European Championships, where he will hope to translate his domestic goalscoring prowess on the international stage.
