Connor Roberts may have just suffered a blow in bid to win a permanent Leeds United move - opinion

Leeds United are being linked with a player that could be about to play in the Champions League final on June 1, and it comes as a blow for Connor Roberts this summer.

The result on Sunday afternoon will determine what kind of summer Leeds will have over the next few months. A win over Southampton at Wembley immediately improves the calibre of player targeted.

Already, Leeds are being linked with certain players they could sign if promotion back to the Premier League is secured at Wembley. Bayer Leverkusen striker Adam Hlozek is one Leeds could decide to sign.

Another is Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff, who has a year left on his contract. Now, Leeds are being touted with a move to sign Borussia Dortmund defender Marius Wolf on a free transfer this summer.

Reports claim that Leeds have already opened talks to sign the five-time Germany defender, who has played 31 times for Dortmund this season. Dortmund face Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

A flying right-back with plenty of height and experienced at the top level, Wolf is about to see his deal at Dortmund expire and if promoted, Leeds will be keen but it comes as bad news for Wales star Roberts.

Bad news for Roberts as Leeds pursue Wolf deal on a free transfer

Roberts joined on loan from Burnley in January, since managing just three starts and 14 appearances for The Whites. Upon his arrival, Roberts immediately said he was open to a permanent move to Elland Road.

Daniel Farke has himself hinted at a permanent move, while reports claim Leeds are keen on doing a deal. But, it might be that promotion sees Leeds decide to move on from Roberts and bring in someone else.

Now, interest in Wolf suggests Leeds are looking at other options on the right of the defence ahead of the summer. It also suggests that Leeds want to push Archie Gray into midfield, instead of right-back.

Promotion could determine Roberts future at Elland Road

There will be a few players in this position at Leeds. Liam Cooper could be one, who is about to see his contract at Leeds expire after 10 years. Promotion certainly ends any chance of a new Leeds contract.

But another season in the Championship may see Cooper sign a new deal, and the same could be said for Sam Byram and Jamie Shackleton who find themselves in the same position as Leeds captain Cooper.

Roberts could fall under that category and while he has more Premier League experience than the Byram and Shackleton and even Cooper, Leeds may view Roberts as a signing for the Championship.
