'From what we know': Inter Miami star now unlikely to be named in Copa America squad this summer - journalist

An Inter Miami star is now unlikely to be called-up for this summer’s Copa America tournament in the United States.

The Herons are expected to be hit hard by in the coming weeks by the headline-soccer competition, with the likes of Lionel Messi, Luis Suarez and Drake Callender all expected to compete at the Copa America.

With Benjamin Cremaschi and Matias Rojas also in contention of being named for their respective national teams, Inter Miami will see a good chunk of their starting XI gone for the summer in what could be a major blow for their Supporters’ Shield chances.

Yet one Inter Miami star is now seemingly set to stay with the Herons.

Inter Miami’s Leonardo Campana unlikely to make Ecuador squad

According to journalist Kevin Verdezoto, Leonardo Campana is unlikely to be named in Ecuador’s squad for the Copa America, with Liga de Quito striker Michael Estrada expected to take the final attacking spot in the roster.

Verdezoto said when asked if Campana could be named in Ecuador’s Copa America squad: “From what we know, I doubt it. We have been saying for a while that with Michael Estrada not scoring that Campana could potentially be a better option for Ecuador.

“But as we know, Estrada still offers with few moments than Campana, who is showing that he needs a lot of service and needs to be in the right areas to create problems.

“For the Copa America, Ecuador will want a forward who has the ability to accelerate and to do a lot with a little, and Estrada is this profile, not to mention that Campana has not even been a regular for Inter Miami this season.”

Campana decision is a blessing in disguise for Inter Miami

With Messi and Suarez expected to be on international duty this summer, Inter Miami will be without their two star attackers for as many as six league games, a problem that any team will struggle with.

Yet with Campana set to stay at Inter Miami during the Copa America, the Herons have a striker who is MLS-proven and has a decent record in scoring in the division.

Moreover, with the likes of Jordi Alba backing Campana’s goalscoring abilities, Inter Miami could see a new star emerge in the 23-year-old attacker if the forward hits the ground running back in the starting XI.
