‘Let’s have the thought’: Erik ten Hag admits recent Manchester United substitute could start FA Cup final

Manchester United are now looking ahead to the FA Cup final having finished the Premier League season with a 2-0 win at Brighton and Hove Albion.

United built on a 3-2 home win over Newcastle United by picking up three points on the final day of the Premier League campaign.

Diogo Dalot opened the scoring before Rasmus Hojlund came off the bench to add number two in the second half.

Two wins to end the season is a positive development for United after a massively disappointing season.

There is still a chance for United to come away with silverware though, and that is why Sunday’s victory feels encouraging.

United head into the FA Cup final this weekend, taking on rivals Manchester City at Wembley.

Beating City is never easy but United will look to take the momentum from two wins in a row and come up with a result.

Rasmus Hojlund knocking on the door

Almost everybody will want to start the FA Cup final, believing that they can make a big impact and bring the trophy back to Old Trafford.

One player really knocking on the door is Rasmus Hojlund.

The Dane has started United’s last two games on the bench with Erik ten Hag going in a different direction.

Ten Hag has gone without a striker against Newcastle and Brighton before bringing Hojlund on in the second half.

Hojlund has scored in both of those substitute appearances and is giving Ten Hag plenty to think about ahead of the cup final.

Ten Hag has now told Manchester World that the decision over whether or not to start with Hojlund against City is a ‘luxury problem’.

The United boss added that Hojlund is ‘absolutely a consideration’ to start against City and will weigh it up ahead of Saturday’s clash.

“The manager, the coaching team has a luxury problem, which is good,” said Ten Hag. “Not a dilemma. It’s a luxury problem, huh? I think both formations can be a success because, as you know, we can play the set-up in the Etihad where we were a threat, I think, with movement in behind.”

“But with Rasmus Hojlund in this form it’s absolutely a consideration and a thought for us to consider. Let’s have the thought. I also want to say that you need not only 11 players in a final, a tough final, but a bench as well,” he added.

Hojlund may remain a super-sub this weekend

As Ten Hag noted, Hojlund didn’t start in the 3-1 defeat at City in March.

Hojlund missed that clash but United did pose a threat going forward in the first half as Ten Hag went without a central striker.

United scored early as Marcus Rashford smashed home the opener with Bruno Fernandes making a fine run in behind the City back line.

With United winning two games in a row whilst playing without a striker, Ten Hag may well be tempted to go with a similar system this weekend.

Bringing Hojlund off the bench has worked well in recent days and few defenders will want to face him late in the day.

Hojlund has plenty of pace and power, exactly the kind of player who can make an impact late on.

Two goals in a matter of days is a real statement from Hojlund, but he may well start from the bench against City.
