Gareth Southgate has named his 33-player preliminary England squad for Euro 2024 as the Three Lions look to finally conquer Europe after falling agonisingly short three years ago.
Marcus Rashford, Jordan Henderson and Raheem Sterling are the headline absentees, having been staples of England's tournament squads in recent times.
Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka are legitimately among the best players in the world, underlining England's status as one of the pre-tournament favourites in Germany.
But Southgate, who has been in charge of the national team since 2016, has also sought to add some new blood, offering Curtis Jones, Jarell Quansah, Adam Wharton, Kobbie Mainoo and others a chance to impress before the squad is cut to a final 26 players just prior to Euro 2024 beginning.
Although England's Lionesses won UEFA Women's Euro 2022 two summers ago, the men's team have never lifted the European Championship trophy and are still searching for major silverware for the first time since the 1966 World Cup. Euro 2020 almost delivered, with England reaching the final but losing a tense penalty shootout against Italy at Wembley Stadium.
