‘Best in the world’: Micah Richards says £62m Man City player is miles ahead of anyone else

Micah Richards has said that one Manchester City player is the best in the world for his specific position.

After winning the Treble last season, the Blues have since gone on to win their sixth Premier League title in seven years and book themselves into a consecutive FA Cup final.

Now though, one pundit and former City player has shared some significant praise for one specific player at the Manchester club who has played a big role in their success over recent years.

In a recent edition of the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast, Richards and Alan Shearer were tasked with coming up with a team of the best Premier League players in each position.

For the defensive-midfield role, Richards picked Rodri and then said this about the Spaniard.

He said: “He’s the best in the world at that position. There’s no one doing what he can do, I don’t think.

“I just think he’s the next [Sergio] Busquets, isn’t he? Rodri is doing it in the Premier League where it’s hustle and bustle. The Spanish league is more technical, we know that, but it’s not as aggressive.”

Rodri is pivotal for Man City

Since joining the Manchester club back in the 2019 summer transfer window from Atletico Madrid in a deal worth £62m, the midfielder has made 256 appearances for City in all competitions.

Across those games, the 27-year-old has scored 26 goals and delivered 30 assists along the way.

His latest goal came during City’s recent 3-1 win over West Ham United to help his side secure their latest Premier League title.

Looking back over the campaign, the three league games City lost were the three games that Rodri missed due to suspension.

With the midfielder having a higher combined total of tackles and interceptions (96) in the league this season than any other City player, this shows

This highlights how important he is for the team and how much of an impact his absence has on them.

Therefore, we feel that it’s easy to see why Richards thinks Rodri is the best defensive-midfielder in the world based on how important he is for such a top side like City.
