Four Wrexham transfer targets can bring major League One experience to Phil Parkinson's squad

Wrexham are preparing for life back in League One, returning to the third tier for the first time since 2005.

Phil Parkinson has overseen back-to-back promotions and must now prepare Wrexham for the biggest test of the Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds era.

Wrexham were able to outspend National League sides and many League Two sides, landing proven players to rapidly move through the leagues.

Now though, Wrexham will be going up against some battle-tested League One sides, such as Barnsley, Peterborough United and Bolton Wanderers.

Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town have been relegated too, two teams who have played Premier League football since Wrexham’s last League One campaign.

Wrexham are making the biggest jump in this exciting project and that means major signings will be needed to improve Parkinson’s squad.

Phil Parkinson focusing on experience for Wrexham

There aren’t too many rumours around for Wrexham right now but four names have been mentioned of late.

Tom Pearce, Stephen Humphrys and Josh Magennis are all thought to be on the radar having all been released by Wigan Athletic.

Another name emerged last week with centre back Marvin Ekpiteta a target as he prepares to leave Blackpool.

All four played League One football last season and their experience at this level is quite remarkable.

26-year-old forward Humphrys has played a staggering 182 games at League One level, recording 43 goals and 16 assists.

Veteran target man Josh Magennis isn’t far behind, racking up 174 League One games across his career.

The 33-year-old target man has scored 48 times and laid on 15 assists in the process, so both he and Humphrys would bring a real knowledge of the League One scene.

Left back Pearce has played more than 70 times in League One too, notching 13 assists along the way.

Ekpiteta has played the fewest League One games of the quartet, but has still managed 59 games at this level.

Parkinson has always favoured experience in his time as Wrexham boss with key players racking up the appearances, often at higher levels.

Eoghan O’Connell, Andy Cannon, Elliot Lee, George Evans, James McClean, Ollie Palmer, Paul Mullin, Jack Marriott and Steven Fletcher all fit that bill in terms of brining real experience.

Parkinson may well go down a similar route in League One and it’s clear that Ekpiteta, Pearce, Humprhys and Magennis would not be surprised by anything on offer in the third tier.

Magennis is the only on the quartet over 30 too, so Wrexham may look to add four players with vast League One experience whilst still having the scope to become key players for the future.
