Sunderland manager round up including latest on Paul Heckingbottom, Liam Rosenior and more

The race to become the next Sunderland manager is still on. But there still appears to be nobody closing in on the vacant position.

Who becomes the next Sunderland manager remains a mystery, more than three months after the club sacked Michael Beale in February.

Fans are beginning to wonder why their club is yet to appoint a new manager, though the reasons behind that are still somewhat unclear.

Sunderland owner Kyril Louis-Dreyfus is thought to be taking his time before hiring the club’s next manager after a disappointing 2023/24 season.

There’s still names coming in and out of contention for the job, though, and here we round up all the Sunderland manager news from the last week…

Paul Heckingbottom to Sunderland latest

One name who’s been in and out of contention is former Sheffield United boss Paul Heckingbottom.

It’s been claimed that he’s the club’s no.1 target and it’s also been claimed that he’s not in the running to become the next Sunderland manager.

And the latter might hold more weight now with Plymouth Argyle set to interview the 46-year-old, per a recent reveal from John Percy.

It’s previously been claimed that Heckingbottom would be interested in the Sunderland job, should he be offered it this summer.

Liam Rosenior to Sunderland latest

Liam Rosenior is another who’s been loosely mentioned alongside the Sunderland job recently, following his sudden exit from Hull City earlier in May.

And Rosenior has also caught the attention of Plymouth Argyle this summer, though the former full-back has turned down the chance to return to management with the south coast club.

Former Black Cats striker Kevin Phillips has recently stated his support for Rosenior becoming the club’s next manager.

Phillips said: “He’s a fantastic coach. He worked well with [Wayne] Rooney at Derby, did a great job their, and he’s stepped up to management.”

Sunderland manager latest on Danny Rohl, Will Still, Bo Svensson

It’s been a quiet past week where the Sunderland manager race is concerned, though Will Still appears to still be in the running.

He’s thought to be studying his UEFA Pro License course following his Reims exit this month, though whether or not Sunderland are waiting on the conclusion of said course remains to be seen.

Danny Rohl is still in talks with Sheffield Wednesday regarding a new contract whilst Bo Svensson, who has recently missed out on the Red Bull Salzburg job after previous links, remains a rumoured candidate.

In more general manager news, journalist Michael Graham has revealed that the Sunderland board are ready to make compromises to find their next boss, albeit not drastic ones, whilst Alan Nixon has revealed that there remains more than one clear candidate for the job.
