Georgia Baseball is one and done at the SEC Tournament, falling 9-1 to LSU on Tuesday morning in Hoover. The Bulldogs, seeded sixth after a 17-13 regular season record in league play, managed just six hits with SEC Player of the Year Charlie Condon going hitless to end his 24-game streak with at least one.
Things got off to a bad start for the Bulldogs. Jarvis Evans loaded the bases with the first three batters he faced, and before the inning was over, he was in the dugout. Two Tigers scored on a single up the middle, and Christian Mracna was called upon from the bullpen to extinguish the flames.
Entering with just one out and the runners on every base, Mracna managed an infield fly and a strike out to escape without any more damage. While LSU added a run in the second to make it 3-0, Georgia did get on the board in the bottom half of the inning. After a Dillon Carter single and a Sebastian Murillo walk, Fernando Gonzalez brought Carter home with a single to left field.
That was all for scoring until the fifth inning when LSU tacked too more onto its total. Mracna turned things over to Daniel Padysak after 73 pitches and 4.0 innings of work, striking out five with just one walk. Then, it was an effort of Padysak, Josh Roberge and DJ Radtke to bring the Bulldogs home.
On the flip side of things, LSU starter Gage Jump shut Georgia’s offense down for 7.0 innings. He struck out seven including both Tre Phelps and Paul Toetz twice. UGA threatened in the fourth with a ground rule double and a hard line drive, but couldn’t bring anybody home. In fact, after the second, four of the next five innings the Dawgs would go down in order.
LSU added insurance in the seventh and ninth innings to bring its scoring total to nine – simply too much for the Bulldogs to compete with on a day their pitching didn’t cooperate and the bats went cold.
Georgia, now 39-15 on the season, will await its postseason fate with the announcement of the NCAA Tournament bracket after the weekend. Both D1Baseball and Baseball America have the Bulldogs hosting a regional in Athens in their most recent projections, but a top-8 national seed for the inside track on a super regional feels far fetched. ESPN2 will air the selection show on Monday at 12:00 p.m. ET with the Division I Baseball Committee announcing the 16 regional host sites on Sunday night.
