‘Number one of all time’: Gary Lineker picks who he thinks is a better manager - Pep Guardiola or Jurgen Klopp

Gary Lineker has shared who he thinks is a better manager out of Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp.

The 2023/24 Premier League campaign ended with Manchester City and Guardiola winning their sixth title in seven years.

For Liverpool, they ended up securing Champions League football for next season but seeing Klopp bring an end to his nine-year spell at Anfield.

Now though, one pundit has shared his verdict for which of the two managers he ranks higher.

In a recent edition of the Match of the Day: Top 10 podcast hosted by Lineker, Micah Richards and Alan Shearer were tasked with building a Premier League XI of the best players in the division for each individual position.

After the two pundits created their teams, the conversation then swayed to who the manager would be for this hypothetical XI.

Once Guardiola and Klopp were narrowed down as the two main candidates, Lineker had this to say about the duo.

He said: “Pep and Klopp, you’d play for either wouldn’t you?

“I think you’d probably enjoy playing for Klopp more. Whereas Pep, I suspect is more demanding and might actually [anger] players occasionally.

“I don’t know, but not that that matters, but I think Pep’s a genius. A footballing genius, I should say.

“For me, he’s the number one of all time, not just now. I’d have him ahead of [Sir Alex Ferguson] because Fergie played a way and he was hard and brilliant and he built different teams and his record is unbelievably good. But did he rethink the game tactically? Not so much.

“For me, it’s Pep. Klopp is unbelievable and if it was any other time I would say Klopp but not with Pep here.”

Guardiola vs Klopp

In 489 games in charge of Liverpool, Klopp won 304, drew 100 and lost 85, picking up one Premier League title, one FA Cup, one Champions League and two Carabao Cups along the way.

Then with Guardiola, he’s won 349 of the 471 games he’s overlooked with City, drawing 57 and losing 65.

In terms of the silverware the 53-year-old has won with the Blues, City have lifted six Premier Leagues, four League Cups, one Champions League and two FA Cups, which could become three FA Cups if they beat Manchester United this weekend.

Just from the silverware record, it’s understandable why Lineker has picked Guardiola ahead of Klopp for the manager role in this ultimate Premier League XI.
