'We have informed': Sporting director confirms 28-year-old is leaving club on a free after links with Leeds

The sporting director of one of Europe’s biggest clubs has just confirmed one of his side’s players will be leaving on a free this summer, shortly after Leeds United were linked with a move.

Leeds are expected to be busy in the transfer window this summer as Daniel Farke looks to strengthen his side. What kind of player Leeds go will be determined by Sunday’s result, and if the club are promoted.

If Leeds do secure an instant return to the Premier League with a win over Southampton on Sunday at Wembley, then one player the club are reportedly set to try and sign is Germany defender Marius Wolf.

The 28-year-old is about to enter the final month of his contract and is due to take up a place on the Dortmund bench on June 1, when Dortmund face Real Madrid in the final of the Champions League.

A game also set to be played at Wembley. Wolf is due to depart Dortmund on a free and Dortmund’s sporting director Sebastian Kehl has been quoted by Ruhr Nachrichten, confirming Wolf will be leaving.

Sebastian Kehl confirms Leeds target Marius Wolf will leave

Reports emerged earlier this week that stated Wolf is a target for Farke’s men if the Yorkshire side get themselves promoted back to the Premier League on Sunday afternoon at Wembley.

Compared to Brazil legend Cafu, Wolf has managed to play 31 times for Dortmund this season and featured in six of their 12 Champions games. But, Wolf has only started twice in those six appearances.

With his six-year stint coming to an end, Dortmund will not be offering him a new deal as Kehl confirms to RN: “We have informed Mateu [Morey] and Marius that we will not be extending their contracts.

“Marius had different phases and made five international appearances as a BVB professional. He is also interested in the possibility of perhaps gaining new experience abroad,” Kehl continued, on Wolf.

Why Dortmund have chosen not to extend Wolf’s contract

So, Wolf is available on a free and is interesting clubs around Europe as well as those in Saudi Arabia. But for a player who is only 28, and having played 31 times this season, it seems a surprise he is leaving.

However, it is claimed that Dortmund do not feel Wolf is earning his enormous wage of £98,000 a week and therefore, the German side have decided to offload the defender rather than try to keep him.

If Leeds do move for Wolf, they will have to be willing to pay big bucks in terms of wages and indeed, the defender will have to accept a significant pay cut for Leeds to even stand a chance of his arrival.
