Andy Cannon achieved impressive feat at Wrexham, it is only matched by four others in the EFL

Wrexham’s Andy Cannon has achieved an impressive feat only matched by four others in the English Football League this term.

It’s a fantastic time to be a Wrexham supporter.

Two consecutive promotions have got fans dreaming of a third when they kick off their League One campaign in August.

It’s their first time at this level in almost two decades, and Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are keen on taking the Reds even higher.

A third successive promotion is what they’re aspiring towards and that is something midfielder Andy Cannon has already achieved.

Whilst striker Paul Mullin has set records at the other end by breaking into the top 10 scorers of all time, Cannon has quietly gone about his business from midfield, with many supporters feeling he deserved to lift the Player of the Year trophy.

The 28-year-old has enjoyed the freedom Phil Parkinson has given him and repaid his manager by scoring six and assisting five goals in League Two – the best return of his career.

Cannon also achieved a third promotion in a row, joining four other players to achieve that impressive feat since the 2021/22 campaign, including Ipswich Town trio Leif Davis, Nathan Broadhead and Freddie Ladapo.

He went up at Wrexham’s expense in 2022 as he lifted the title while on loan at Stockport County before joining the Reds in December and basking in the glory of two more promotions.

It’s been a whirlwind few seasons for the Englishman, who will no doubt be eyeing up a fourth once the next campaign rolls around.

Wrexham’s midfield can step up to League One

Parkinson’s current best midfield options to choose from are; James McClean, Elliot Lee, George Evans and Andy Cannon, with Tom O’Connor also capable of slotting in the engine room.

That quintet have 414 appearances in League One between them, which evinces how Wrexham’s recruitment has been tailor-made to tackle the higher divisions.

Using the pull of their Hollywood owners, the Welsh side have attracted ex-Premier League talents to the Racecourse and this has reinforced their ambition.

A step up to the third tier has only heightened their desire to achieve further success and an intriguing transfer window awaits, with many clubs remaining patient before dipping their toes into the market.

Midfield is arguably the position that needs strengthening the least, and although the departure of Luke Young is a gap that needs plugging, the quality they have already suggests it’s a position that can wait.

Wrexham will certainly be looking at a new goalkeeper, centre back and striker before a midfielder takes their fancy.
