Five Hawkeyes earn All-Big Ten Baseball honors

Prior to the Iowa Baseball opening round game at the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday, five Hawkeyes were honored as All-Big Ten selections for their efforts on the diamond this year. The voting was done by the conference’s head coaches and the results were announced by the Big Ten on Tuesday afternoon.

First Team All-Big Ten Selections

RHP Brody Brecht – Brody Brecht has now earned first team honors for back-to-back seasons and becomes the sixth starting pitcher to do it under Head Coach Rick Heller. Brecht has posted a 3.55 ERA in 14 starts this season, including 118 strikeouts over 71.0 innings. Back on May 11th, he struck out nine against Illinois and surpassed Jim Magrane (1999 – 110) for the single season strikeout record at Iowa. Opponents are averaging just 0.59 hits against Brecht, while he averages 14.96 strikeouts per nine innings. Over his last four starts in Big Ten play, Brody allowed five earned runs over 29.2 innings.

3B Raider Tello – Raider Tello becomes the sixth infielder to earn first team honors under Rick Heller and is the first non-first baseman to earn the distinction since SS Nick Roscetti back in 2016. Tello is batting .370 on the season, with 78 hits, 19 doubles, four triples, seven home runs and 60 RBI’s. He is tied for fifth in the Big Ten with 30 extra base hits. Tello has racked up 23 multi-hit games and has reached base in 50 of 52 games played.

Third Team All-Big Ten Selections

OF Andy Nelson – After being limited to just 18 games in 2022 and missing all of last season with an injury, Andy Nelson showcased his talent this season earning third team honors. He is the eighth outfielder under Rick Heller to be an All-Big Ten selection. Nelson is batting .340 this season, with a .460 on-base percentage, including 54 hits, seven doubles, nine home runs and 44 RBI’s.

C/DH Reese Moore – After redshirting during his true freshman season last year, Reese Moore has burst onto the scene in his second year with the Hawkeyes. Not only did he earn third team honors, but he also became the third freshman under Rick Heller to land on the Big Ten All-Freshman team. Moore is batting .293, with a .428 on-base percentage, including 48 hits, 15 doubles, five home runs and 32 RBI’s.

Iowa Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient

SS Michael Seegers – Michael Seegers earned the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award, which is given out to a player for each team. Per the Big Ten, “The distinction is presented to student-athletes who display sportsmanship and ethical behavior, are in good academic standing, and demonstrate good citizenship outside of athletics.” Seegers is batting .274 this season, including 52 hits, eight doubles, two home runs and 31 RBI’s. He is also a perfect ten for ten on stolen base attempts.

Up Next, the Hawkeyes will face off against the Michigan Wolverines in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament on Wednesday. First pitch is set for 2:00pm CT on the Big Ten Network.
