Three-time Paralympic Games table tennis medallist Ross Wilson will be hoping to secure a place in the British squad for Paris 2024 with a final qualifying opportunity this week.
Wilson, from Minster, won bronze in the team events at London, Rio and Tokyo and is part of the GB squad competing at the Paralympic World Qualification Tournament in Pattaya, Thailand from Thursday.
This is the final opportunity for athletes to qualify for this summer’s Paralympic Games with class winners earning a qualification place for the tournament in Paris - unless they are granted a wildcard.
The tournament will be a new experience for 28-year-old Wilson, who just missed out on qualification on his world ranking. He’s competing in class 9.
“Competition will be extremely tough,” said BPTT performance director Gorazd Vecko.
“With only class winners qualifying for Paris Paralympic qualification has been harder than ever this time.”
However Wilson goes into the event on the back of a medal-winning display at the Slovenia Open earlier this month, where he won doubles silver after a disappointing singles campaign.
He said in Slovenia: “I’m not very happy with my [singles] competition here, but I think Thailand will be a completely different competition and I’m looking forward to getting out there and challenging myself with that.”
