'You've known when to say goodbye'... Casemiro pays emotional tribute to former teammate

Manchester United midfielder Casemiro might soon be weighing up his own future. First, he is looking to do what he does best, win a trophy in the upcoming FA Cup final.

Casemiro has made a habit of winning silverware, lifting the Carabao Cup in his first season at Manchester United, even scoring the opening goal in the final.

Prior to his United move, Casemiro won five Champions League trophies with Real Madrid, and even signed off with the UEFA Super Cup.

He couldn’t have done it alone. Casemiro was part of a regularly triumphant three-man midfield with Luka Modric and Toni Kroos.

Toni Kroos retires

German international midfielder Toni Kroos made the surprise announcement this week he is set to retire from football at the age of 34.

He will play Euro 2024 in his homeland this summer, and call it quits. He would love to bow out on a high.

The decision comes as a little shock, considering teammate Luka Modric, 38, has just decided to extend his Real Madrid contract and play on for another year.

Bruno Fernandes paid tribute to Kroos, labelling him ‘one of the best‘, showing his admiration for the current La Liga title winner.

Casemiro has a great bond with Kroos, with the German last yearrevealing how much he still misses his presence at Madrid.

The Brazilian sent out a message on social media, labelling Kroos the ‘perfect player’.

He wrote: “My dear Toni. Champions teammate and friend forever. You’ve known when to say goodbye, so he looks back proudly and smiles: you’ve earned it.

“There is only one Kroos, the one we have all enjoyed (Lukita and I especially), but the one in the photo is Toni, 𝘮𝘪 Toni.

“How many anecdotes, victories and titles have been forged in that gym. It was our office and when we had to get serious, we did it; and when it was time to have fun, well, too. You are the perfect player, but I’ll stick with the person.

“Little more, good friend. It has been a pleasure being by your side. Be happy.”

Casemiro future unclear

It is a loss to the game to see Toni Kroos retire. He has been one of the best midfielders of the past decade, a player Manchester United could and should have signed back in 2014.

Casemiro’s own future could be heading towards a crossroads. The Brazilian is on an expensive contract at Manchester United, which Ineos may prefer to shift if a buyer can be found.

Former Real teammate Raphael Varane last week announced his exit from Manchester United.

Varane’s next club is unclear, but at 31, he’s not quite ready to follow Kroos into retirement.
